Our city has never been more ready to rage than right now. After the launch of GuestHouse Day Club at Stingaree this weekend, the nightclub has been stretching its wings and tapping into what the people of San Diego want: more party time, all the time.
In continuing this theme, GuestHouse at Stingaree is bringing glammed-up party rock trio Hyper Crush on Friday, Dec. 9th. As part of the Night Access 3 Year Anniversary celebration, the electro/hip-hop/pop team is ready to rock, rap, and rally all night. Composed of Donny Fontaine taking care of vocals and beats, Holly Valentine on vocals, and Preston Moronie working the turntables, Hyper Crush ramps up three distinct talents on one stage.
With their forthcoming album New Wave on its way into our sound systems, the band has a fierce agenda to get us shoulder-shaking and shimmying. And even better, Stingaree is gifting every guest with a pair of 3D glasses to witness the first ever 3D Light Show at GuestHouse.
Discover more about Hyper Crush, their unique sound, and their plans to rock your face off Friday night.
DiscoverSD: How did you three meet and how did you begin producing music together?
Hyper Crush: Me (Donny) and Preston met in middle school. We had already been friends for a while when Preston met Holly in High School. I went to a different high school but still hung out with Preston and ended up hanging with Holly too. Preston and Holly were in a Jazz/Hip Hop group for a while. Not too long after that, me and Preston began to make beats and rap. We started a Hardcore Hip Hop group called War Machine. We had Holly sing on a few tracks and I guess that was the first time we all made music together. We were all around 17 at the time. Anyways, we all ended up starting Hyper Crush.
DSD: How do you classify your style of music?
Hyper Crush: Definitely aggressive. We like the most is up tempo/aggressive stuff. We of course fuse a lot of different sounds as most artists do now. We try to also be light hearted and fun at the same time. At the end of the day, it’s party music and we will always bring a pop element to whatever we do for the simple fact that we have singing and rapping on most of our music. We just want people to have a good time and get hype.
DSD: Where do you find your musical inspiration?
Hyper Crush: We pull inspiration from so many places. Classic music, new styles of music, 80's/90's movies and culture, it really can come from anywhere for us but those are some of the main ones.
DSD: What tracks are you most proud of to date?
Hyper Crush: The Arcade did a lot for us. Always fun performing that. There’s some songs we did on our Mixtape Vol. 2 that are some of our favorites like Heaven, The Future and Infinite Youth from our album The Arcade is probably one of our favs as well. We have a lot of new music that will probably take the place of a lot of those.
DSD: What producers and musicians are you inspired by?
Hyper Crush: Groups like The Prodigy, New Order, Metallica, The Chemical Brothers, Wu Tang, Tribe Quest, The Smiths. As far as producers go we've always loved Premiere, Rza, Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Missy Elliot, Liam Howlett, Jeff Lynne. There’s a lot of new people that inspire us too, Afrojack, Deadmau5, Justice, Skrillex, Kavinsky, Steve Angello, Avicii, Diplo. Ya know, all those guys. Also, The Strokes, La Roux, M83, MGMT, GAMES.
DSD: How does your artistic trio work? What are your individual strongest talents?
Hyper Crush: Everything is really a group effort. Preston and I make the beats. Preston mans the computer like a boss. Me and Holly do all the vocals. When it comes to song concepts and direction of the group, it’s all 3 of us working together.
DSD: What new projects are you working on in the coming year?
Hyper Crush: We are in the process of finishing our new album Night Wave which we were hoping to get out late January to early February. We are really excited to drop it!
DSD: We can’t wait to party with you guys at GuestHouse on December 9th. What can we expect to experience during your show?
Hyper Crush: We will be drinking quite heavily. We plan on goin hard that night. We will do what we do best which is rock the crowd and whoever else is in there. We might even ask everyone to put they're (f**ckin) hands up. Those who fail to comply might be subjected to the Super Soaker, and we'll do a shout out to Night Access for their 3 Year Anniversary.
DSD: In a club setting, it’s all about the performance. How do you guys interact on stage?
Hyper Crush: It’s become second nature to us. We just do what we do. We each have our places on stage and sometimes it gets cramped up there so you gotta constantly be looking for the other person’s movements. Holly is always the star of the show, people just love her so much. I do most of the talking to the crowd keepin sh*t hype and Preston definitely gets the hypest. That fool will stage dive anywhere. If he thinks people might catch him, he's goin for it.
DSD: What are your hobbies and passions, outside the music industry?
Hyper Crush: Donny: eating extremely spicy foods, sounds lame but working out (not like a muscle head douche. I do it for my health), lurking on the internets, watching documentaries, I've gotten extremely interested in politics and world history as of late. Especially with collapse of the world economy looming. I like to worry.
Holly: Designing clothes, Bikram Yoga, cooking, I’m kind of a health nut. My Family is really important to me so I spend a lot of time with them.
Preston: Watching Movies, Skating, Snowboarding, Alcoholics Anonymous, Preston is obsessed with cowboy lifestyle so anything involving a campfire.
Love Hyper Crush? So do we! Check them out live at GuestHouse this Friday, Dec. 9th!
