With the
onslaught of several super-sized dance clubs, it’s refreshing to
know there are also a few places Downtown where you can simply lounge. Visions
is an attractive addition to Gaslamp’s nightlife circuit.
Though
themes seem to be the rage elsewhere, this new lounge doesn’t
indulge. Instead, the whole place is brimming with class of the
highest caliber, in sleek steel and cool colors, all hung with
enormous plasma screens. This is the place to go when you want to
show off those fabulous new heels without breaking them in, or that
expensive shirt without soaking it in other people’s sweat. This is
the place to go when you want to throw a grown-up party—even if you
don’t feel like a grown-up on a daily basis.
First and
foremost, at least during the evening, Visions is a restaurant,
carving out classic cuisine with a few innovative ingredients thrown
in. The menu is also mainly health-conscious. For example, the green
salad is organic, and is topped with roasted pears, herb chevre
cheese, and served in an apple cider vinaigrette. The oysters are
served with sturgeon caviar. A wood-grilled pizza is garnishes with
fig marmalade, proscuitto, and blue cheese. There’s even a gourmet
chicken pot pie appetizer (who knew?) for those who want to
tastefully cheat on their diet, and a substantial sushi bar. But
points off for the foie gras burger—aren’t we beyond that,
especially in a place with this kind of vision?
