Lucy’s Tavern,
located in the relaxed Point Loma neighborhood of Ocean
Beach, is definitely a dive and
definitely a drinker’s bar, yet it can’t shake that cool OB
vibe. Rarely packed to the gills, this place does get regularly busy—usually
with just the right amount of customers. Maybe it’s the closeness of the beach,
or that Lucy’s is a corner bar in a sleepier part of town. But Lucy’s Tavern
is, for many, a standard for casual drinks and a kickback pool game.
Past patrons sometimes whine about unfriendly service and
below-par facilities, but most seem happy with what they pay for at Lucy’s,
including the cheap pitchers ($5) and cheaper strong drinks. Lucy’s welcomes a
range of customers with its blue awnings and a name-bearing sign that evokes an
orange Ocean Beach sunset. Despite its relaxed feel,
this bar doesn’t mess around when it comes to boozing. So grab your flip-flops
and some quarters for the jukebox, because Lucy’s awaits.
Note: On certain nights, the majority of patrons are
country-singin’ navy boys, so if you feel too hip to handle crew cuts and
bonding over Bush, then save Lucy’s for a post-beach pit-stop, when the sun and
salty water have you feeling extra friendly.
