The Swedish invasion has arrived. This Friday, April 20th, singer and songwriter John Martin brings his big talents to Stingaree Nightclub.
While he was once part of a bar-touring band in Stockholm, you’ll likely recognize his voice for larger reasons. It’s Martin who provided the vocals in the take-you-away Swedish House Mafia hit “Save the World” as well as Avicii’s “Fade Into Darkness.” Now an international success story, touring the world and making heads turn, Martin keeps a humble passion for the quality of his lyrics and desire to connect with his listeners.
Lucky us, this superstar makes his stop in San Diego before he rejoins Swedish House Mafia at Coachella, weekend two. But before you catch him live, read on as John Martin tells us more about his boom into the music industry, what new projects he’s been working on and what we can expect at his San Diego show.
Get to know John Martin in this week's Artist Spotlight.
DiscoverSD: Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get your start in the music industry?
John Martin: I'm a singer/songwriter from Sweden. Music has always been a big part of my life, and since last year it has become my profession. Before, I was in a band playing bars In Stockholm for many years. It wasn't until two years ago when I met the songwriter Michel Zitron things started to happen. We found out we could write beautiful songs together. Right now we're finishing my debut album, and I'm also touring all over the world.
DSD: Greatest professional achievements so far?
JM: One of the highlights of my career so far is my performance with Swedish House Mafia at Madison Square Gardens in December 2011. It has always been a dream and to get that opportunity in my first year as a professional felt a bit unreal. It was a magical moment and it inspired me to work even harder so I can be back there one day headlining on my own.
DSD: You’ve teamed up with Swedish House Mafia and Avicii. What were those collaborations like?
JM: Last year Sebastian Ingrosso showed up in our studio In Stockholm. Me and Michel played him songs we've written for my album, He liked what he heard and It became the start of a great collaboration. Together we wrote “Save the World” that later became an international hit. After hearing “Save The World” Avicii asked us to develop a song he was working on called “Penguin Song”. Me and Michel wrote lyrics and melodies for it and it became "Fade into Darkness".
DSD: How do you classify your style?
JM: I don't believe in classifying music. For me it's all about writing great music that people hopefully will enjoy no matter what style they're into. In my songs you can hear a lot of different influences from rock to modern club-music. What makes it special is that it always has strong melodies and lyrics telling a story.
DSD: What new projects are you working on in the coming year?
JM: I'm going to finish the album, release it and tour the world. There are also new collaborations coming up that I'm very excited about. My music means a lot to me and I can't wait to let you all hear it!
DSD: What are your hobbies and passions, outside the music industry?
JM: Well, music is my passion so I’m very lucky to have it as my job. I'm also a fan of good food and far too expensive wine.
DSD: We can’t wait to party with you at Stingaree on April 20th. What can we expect during your show?
JM: I'm as excited as you are! It doesn't matter what I tell you now because my show is never the same. Just make sure you'll be there. I will entertain you!
