I have no qualms admitting when I’m addicted to something… anything.
Be it booze, illicit substances, women or music, I’ve always been especially cognizant of my various vices. Such self-awareness has probably saved my arse numerous times over the years; however, I am now officially past the point of no return. This time there is no salvation. I am hopelessly, absolutely, utterly addicted to Sirius/XM satellite radio.
It all began innocently enough with the purchase of a new vehicle a few months back. At first, I had completely forgotten the car came equipped with a three-month trial subscription to Sirius/XM. Were it not for a moment of fated button fumbling on my part, my obsession would cease to exist. Fortunately, for both myself and the Sirius/XM stockholders, it is very much alive and kicking… not to mention rapidly infiltrating my life.
I now sneak out of work every day and sit in my car for an hour or so just to catch the Jason Ellis Show (weekdays, 12-4). If you haven’t heard of it, and you’re a Sirius/XM subscriber, tune to Radio Faction, XM52, and enjoy. Do it soon, however. Rumor has it (as per Jason Ellis himself), there have been talks of canceling the show due to contract-renewal issues. The phrases “livid” and “crushed” wouldn’t do my sentiments justice if such travesties come to fruition. Yeah, it’s that f’in good.
Marky Ramone, Tony Hawk, Johnny Moseley, Tom Morello, and Bam Margera all host their own respective shows featuring music and musings running the gamut from punk rock to potty jokes. Oh yeah, and interspersed throughout the day, in-between shows, there just so happens to be a generous helping of what I so affectionately call “good” music. You know, bands like The Pogues, The Clash, The Ramones, Bouncing Souls, The Dickies, Anti-Flag… the list goes on.
Okay, the stroking of the Sirius/XM schlong will cease from this point forth, as the purpose of this column is to praise the phallus otherwise known as the San Diego music scene.
You’re pissed you missed: Well, a whole buttload of San Diego concerts this past month, to be honest. Me, I’m always pissing about missing shows, as I’m invariably out shooting nightlife somewhere in this glorious city. I was really bummed about missing the Young Dubliners June 13 at The Belly Up (pictured below). Sure, it was June, and you’ve grown accustomed to seeing them headline in March at the Sham Rock Festival (Can you guys please get Flogging Molly this year? I’ll sell my one of my kidneys to help pay for it. You only need one, right?), but they’re a solid band, regardless. I was uber-peeved about missing not only Dinosaur Jr. (early show), but also the Queers on June 9 at the Casbah. Don’t fret, however, I had plenty of friends gloat about the brilliance of both performances. Thanks guys! Oh yeah, and a little band by the name of the Dead Kennedys hit the stage June 7 at the House of Blues. For the more emo-oriented, The Cure played COX Arena on June 3, and a whole bunch of random bands played the San Diego County Fair throughout the month. None of which, by the way, truly tickled my fancy. You’ve had better lineups guys… much better.

Do yourself a favor: And go see a live Shark Attack performance when the opportunity presents itself. And no, I’m not talking about their DJ set, but rather an actual live DJ/band show incorporating the talent of fellow “band members,” Aaron Blomberg and Marshall Wilcoxson. Mikey (Delgado) plays bass and Pat (Heaney) makes a whole s%&tload of noise on an array of instruments. I watched a sound check recently at Voyeur and was even more impressed than when I used to see them perform solely as a DJ duo. (myspace.com/sharkattacksd)
And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, and I have Bam Margera’s Sirius/XM radio show to thank for this, there’s The Agonist (pictured below); a speed metal band hailing from Montreal, Canada, playing the Jumping Turtle on Wednesday, July 29. Now, while speed metal isn’t necessarily my brand of scotch, these guys (and girl) absolutely kill it. Most impressive is the ability of lead singer, Alissa White, to growl/sing as if she had balls bigger than any man, while launching into beautiful harmonies mere moments later. I was simultaneously impressed and awed. Not to mention the band’s drummer, Simon McKay, is insanely talented. (myspace.com/theagonist)

And on the one’s and two’s: There were literally too many DJ’s passing through our beautiful city this past month to list. And with my dirty 30 falling on the 30th I kind of lost track of everyone behind the decks towards the end of the month. Thank you alcohol!
