Placed inconspicuously (especially given the name) among a few pawn shops, an "adults only" depot and a liquor store, the San Diego Beauty Bar lies along a skid-row corner like a diamond in the rough.
Once you walk through the door, you are no longer in the ghetto, or in the 21st century for that matter, but rather in a salon from the 1960's. Chairs are hair dryers and if you feel the need to get your nails done, there's usually some fashionista who is ready to put a modern spin on your old manicure.
Yet, there is so much going on that one may not have time to sit down, as the Beauty Bar boasts an impressive list of live music and DJs. Wander out from the salon and into the Beauty Bar's open air dance floor where people have been known to get animated or simply kicked out. And for all you die-hard smokers, the Beauty Bar is still keeping it legal in the outside area.
Beware on Saturday nights, or nights when the more big-name talent hits town, as this place can receive a high amount of volume. Although the drinks are reasonably priced, you may never get one for some time unless you are incredibly good looking or are a line-backer for the Chargers. Also included, but to be expected if you're going to see any popular or touring act, is a varying door fee. Yet, for the simple price of admission, the Beauty Bar knows how to host a good show in style.
Insider Tip: If you don't live near the area you might want to cab it with a bunch of friends, as this place is about as far out on El Cajon Blvd. as it gets.
