Now that Halloween has officially expired and the pixie dust and glitter have settled deep within the carpet fibers of whomever’s house you opted to fornicate at post-Hallow’s Eve festivities, it’s time to move on to indulging in the gluttony upon which this great nation of ours was allegedly founded. Shocking though it may seem, Thanksgiving is a mere two weeks away, and I, for one, am already fasting in honor of the decadent occasion.
October, however, did not expire without leaving an indelible mark on our beloved city in the form of massively debaucherous Halloween events and the loss of one of San Diego’s most timeless live venues — namely Canes.
You’re pissed you missed: (And this is all-too apropos given the demise of the aforementioned venue) The Butthole Surfers and the Melvins at Canes on Saturday, Oct. 17.
To have two such timeless, influential bands sharing the stage on a given night was pure, utter musical mayhem.
The Surfers — with their reunited lineup of Gibby Haynes, Paul Leary, Jeff Pinkus, King Coffey and Teresa Taylor — exhibited all the energy and musical eccentricity the band created to distinguish their signature sound when they formed back in Texas in 1981. The show was equal parts creativity and chaos, blending elements of punk, psychedelic and, of course, heavy metal. In short, it was an epic show, harking back to the days of headbanging whilst high, listening to Indpendent Worm Saloon and Electric Larryland.
And insofar as the Melvins are concerened, well… They’re the Melvins. That’s speaks enough in and of itself…
Do yourself a favor: And check out some local music this month. I’d start by giving The Dabbers a listen on the band’s MySpace page (myspace/wearethedabbers), and if you dig the tunes, go check ‘em out next Friday, Nov. 20, at the Quint Gallery. I’d also advise you to give Braaiins! a run through (myspace/wearebraiins). They’ll be playing the Radio Room on Tuesday, Dec. 8, with Cowabunga Babes (Austin), Christmas Island, and Whoa Hunx. Then there’s The Widows (my/thewidowssandiego); one of my more recent and probably favorite discoveries in the garage/punk vein. They don’t have any upcoming shows listed, however, keep an eye and ear out. (pictured: The Dabbers by Sade Williams)
And on the one’s and two’s: It should come as little surprise that San Diego clubs brought out the big guns in terms of DJ’s for Halloween weekend; but that wasn’t to say the rest of the month was devoid of talent. Far from it…

Hip happenings: Halloween had its fair share of massive parties, but I will say (simply because I was attending, camera in hand) that DJhere’s annual Halloween Ball at The Prado was utterly insane. Granted, I don’t remember most of the night (thank you Maker’s Mark), but from what I can recall, I had a great time… I think? Well, if anything, the hangover I endured the following day truly told the tale. (pictured)
