On Friday, October 19th, the MC Battle to end all MC Battles will be held at the Rhythm Lounge in Point Loma.
I found out about this while having the Rhythm Lounge special (5 bucks for a pint of bud and a shot of whiskey) after the Rilo Kiley Show at Soma. According to the bartender Lola, “It's going to be straight janky!" I don't know what janky means, but I want to find out.
People generally think it's hard to find good rap music in San Diego. We're not a tough city, or a cold city, or by any means, a city that has much of rough artistic edge. We're not a city that generates the type of self-expression traditionally found with two turntables and a mic. There really hasn't been a significant rapper to come out of the San Diego hip hop scene.
Yet without a doubt, a San Diego hip hop and rap scene does indeed exist, and it offers a strange fascination for its voyeurs - kind of like watching a train wreck.
If you feel the need to lose yourself in the music and the moment, the prize is $100 and a spot to perform at the next show. Even if you think rap music is ridiculous, this should be entertaining. There's nothing like watching people rip each other apart with impromptu poetry set to dance music in a commercial zone next to the IPay One Center; a place that recently hosted High School Musical On Ice.
