To call Star Bar
ornamental would only begin to describe the atmosphere of this brightly lit
dive bar, located in the heart of the Gaslamp,
amidst some of Downtown’s
fanciest bars. Star Bar is tiny by physical comparison, but monumental in that
it still remains in the same location, after decades of transformation and
renovation have taken place all around it.
Somehow, this little hole-in-the-wall still draws an
impressive crowd and a strong crew of regulars. One reason is that Star Bar
does not pretend to be something it isn’t. Its tacky décor is intentional, and
its unorganized interior is proudly displayed. The lights, the promotional
posters on the wall, the out-of-shape furniture, and the handwritten signs
everywhere indicate to customers, from the minute they walk through the door,
that Star Bar is no five-star hotel lounge. It’s simply a longstanding dive
with a reputation for good, cheap beer and cute bartenders.
At Star Bar, don’t expect to be able to move around a whole
lot, especially on the weekends. While the bar isn’t large, it’s rarely
completely empty, whether it’s filled with boxes, bottles, or bodies. Star Bar
is gaudy and unashamed: anyone with similar qualities is immediately welcome
inside.
