Strange musky odors mingling in the air with lingering, ever-present and somewhat mysterious smells known only to those dive bars that stand by their reputation.
Homeless and miscellaneous wasted youth, littered around the entrance waiting oh, so patiently for that 6am opening; pool tables, live bands and a few underage kids loitering around dart boards - all of these elements, going somewhat extinct at the new Office in North Park.
Sticky floor no more for the once self-proclaimed (and this is one venue that has certainly earned it), "premiere dive bar extraordinaire," because, like many bars and clubs as of late in San Diego, Scolari's Office has experienced one serious renovation. To investigate the new remodel, I must admit that I almost drove past the place. From the front door to the bathroom, Scolari's, to all who have flocked, haunted or visited this memorable relic, is absolutely unrecognizable to the unaccustomed eye.
Keeping with the "office" theme of things, the new Scolari's is cleverly disguised along 30th Street by a single door, labeled "office." It's the kind of entrance you would only find at schools, corporate and government buildings, (mail slot actually included). Cozy booths, ornamented by small glowing candles adorn the south wall, and with the black leather bar stools to match, the new Scolari's makes one feel more like an undercover CIA agent at the peak of the modern disco era rather than a hooligan in hiding from yesterday's shenanigans at Beauty Bar.
Yet, patrons of the old "office" will not be disappointed, despite the change from archaic watering hole to contemporary metallic décor. Though the old stage has been replaced by an office desk circa 1970 (rad) standing in for a DJ booth and the new Scolari's now has an actual designated dance floor, some things will always remain the same. The North Park Scolari's Office, new or old, is still a happening neighborhood hotspot with plenty of entertainment incorporated.
Insider Tip: Don't let the makeover fool you because Scolari's is still doin' things the ole fashioned way, as this joint is still cash-only.
