Every night, the Honey Bee
Hive transforms into what seems like a massive dance hall, judging by the
masses of lively, gyrating people inside. In actuality, this club is a small,
basement-level venue with a large underground following and a spectacular
diversity of music. While the Hive focuses mostly on drum ‘n bass, house,
hip-hop, and breakbeats, celebrated DJ’s and live performers often come from locales
as far away as the UK
to perform.
The Honey Bee Hive can grow so loud, dancing is much easier
than trying to hold a conversation. So if you’re on a first date, you might
want to forgo the Hive, despite the tempting crowds that gather round
outside—unless of course, you and your date prefer the sounds of thumping bass
over each other’s voices.
Glowing yellow honeycomb walls flank the stage, and graffiti-like
art abounds, lending the hive a funky vibe that exemplifies the creative energy
the club constantly generates. The adjacent Honey Bee Café adds a coffeehouse
element to the club, plus a tasty menu consisting of burgers, wraps, and fish
tacos, should you need to refuel. Honey Bee Café hours vary depending on the
club’s events, but head over to the Hive any night (it’s located right across
from City College) for a musical energy boost.
