When something is clearly from one place, and recreated in another foreign area, it's sometimes hard to accept it as something worthy of your time, especially when authenticity is the main selling point.
When you walk in to The Field in the Gaslamp, you may ask yourself two questions: Why am I about to get drunk in a bar that looks exactly like the Pinocchio themed fast food restaurant at Disneyland, and why am I legitimately afraid that when I am drunk here I am going to get bit in the leg by a Leprechaun named Sully who is too drunk to remember where his gold is?
At first glance, The Field looks like an Irish pub, and it should. Everything you see in the bar, from pints to pictures, was brought over from Ireland. Sure, this is cool, if you like surrounding yourself with authentic elements in a fake location. But, if you are looking for a real Irish pub atmosphere, you are not going to find it here.
The Field doesn't try to regenerate an Irish drinking sensibility; it tries to bring to the forefront a truth that is far more important: Good fries are good and good fries with gooey cheese on top of them are better. And when you add a good curry sauce to said good cheese fries, God will appear, tap you on the shoulder, and say, "pass over a me-damned plate!"
The Field is a fun bar packed with every Irish stout and Irish whiskey you could ever ask for. Don't worry about the authenticity of the place; the cheese fries are better than anything you'll find in Ireland.
