Jewel Box is one
of Downtown’s
best dive bars. But that doesn’t mean trendsetters and pretty people frequent this
hidden hot spot. Expect, instead, a steady crew of barflies, chummy service,
and an eclectic mix of all-age customers who appreciate a good dive when they
see one.
Anyone who frequents the Jewel Box will tell you it’s one of
their favorite bars—but please, don’t tell too many people. The bar is known
for being one of the only bars in San
Diego to have an actual shuffleboard. Those not
shuffle-inclined should be sufficiently entertained with other key items of
simplistic bar virtue, including two pool tables and a juke box.
Speaking of simplistic virtue, Star Bar features a menu of
classic bar food at exceptional prices.
Included are homemade onion rings for a mere $3.95 and a basket of fries
for $2.50. More group snacks, especially handy for a game night, include nachos
(with or without chili), jalapeño poppers, and the Jewel Box Potato Quesadilla.
Of course, there are also burgers—none above $8—and salads. Check out the
chalkboard for the soup and special of the day. In the chance you’d also like a
drink, make sure to admire the Jewel Box’s 25-plus bottles of tequila. And
don’t forget to order a shot for your neighbor.
