Trying to find a poppin' place without an outrageous line along Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp is about as likely as finding a parking spot downtown under 20 dollars.
It is also very doubtful that if you take on the nocturnal trek that is The Gaslamp you will survive a night without seeing someone who knows you somehow, because let's face it, San Diego is the biggest "small town." But if you want to step out of the limelight for a moment the Red C Lounge, marked by a small doorway along Fifth, is a great little "underground" spot.
One must literally submerge themselves beneath the concrete of the Gaslamp to discover this venue. Upon descending the narrow stairwell you may get the feeling of being in someone's decked-out basement. The Red C tempts patrons to escape into this sub-surface world and get loose, have a martini and dance to the heavy rhythms of drum and bass, break beats, and any other number of electric genres on the Red C menu.
The Red C Lounge is not for people who do not enjoy small spaces as this venue probably only holds about 150-200 people, but the dark smoky hues of the red lights cast a mysterious glow, creating an intimate hideout and gives you the fancy notion of a naughty affair.
Those who flock to the Red C make up the melting pot of San Diego, as you probably will not be exposed to too much of one trend, (this can sometimes be a good thing), hanging around this little hotspot. This is not the type of place where you go to be seen, but rather a place of elusion where you might take a confidential group or a confidant to covet your attention.
Insider Tip: The Red C Lounge is still keeping the dream alive for all you deep house groupies.
