When goth-glam club Voyeur graced the Gaslamp Quarter in 2009, it changed San Diego nightlife forever.
From the bars to the bathrooms, TV screens project live video that is captured by a series of lipsick cams positioned throughout the club. Eerie Renaissance paintings decorate the walls while a cornice adorned with gilded skulls encircles the main room and a near life-size horse lamp guards the door. Though all eyes are on you when you’re partying at Voyeur, patrons aren’t phased, as their eyes are fixated on the massive L.E.D. wall that sets the stage for resident DJs, live bands, guest DJ acts, live art, go-go girls, circus performers, and whatever varied entertainment stunts the unpredictable Voyeur prodigies have up their sleeves for that particular evening.
Voyeur truly is the first club of its kind in San Diego, and though we locals praise the venue for endless reasons, Voyeur is most well renowned for the music. Voyeur has gifted us with such huge name acts as The Bloody Beetroots, Calvin Harris, Kaskade, Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke, Wolfgang Gartner, Laidback Luke, Felix Da Housecat, Tommy Lee and Deadmau5, just to name a few. I mean, let’s be honest here, is there anyone out there that would actually skip one party at Voyeur, even if you tried? Ummm yeah…that’s what we thought.
As if the music lineup, bottle-popping, coffin-diving, L.E.D. lightshow madness weren’t enough to keep us coming back for more and more every weekend, those crazy masterminds have done it yet again. The trendsetting San Diego nightclub has unveiled a groundbreaking and innovative tool that has once again set them apart from every other nightclub in our city. San Diego, meet the all-new Voyeur iPhone App.
That’s right folks, this innovative iApp quite literally provides all that we could ever want or need to know about Voyeur right at the touch of our fingertips. Whether you want to check the upcoming lineup or view photos from past shows; buy tickets to a specific event or book a table, you can do it all now in the tap of a finger. Pretty impressive, huh? Because we know you’re dying to find out the details, we sat down with the man behind this mobile innovation Ricardo Morey, CEO and Founder of iApp Technologies and got the skinny on everything it has to offer. The best part? If you download the iApp you get free entry to a Voyeur show! Get it here!
DiscoverSD: Why did Voyeur create a new iPhone App?
Ricardo Morey: The idea behind the Voyeur Mobile Application is to provide its customers instant real time handheld accessibility to Voyeur and its shows. Voyeur wanted to grant customers access to event bookings, photos from events, and the ability to pre-purchase tickets or table service for its upcoming performances.
DSD: What does this new iApp do and how it will upgrade our VIP nightlife experience with Voyeur?
RM: This iApp is great for anyone who is a fan of Voyeur or is interested in visiting the club. Anyone who has been to Voyeur can testify that the experience is emotional. They have done a great job creating a great brand backed by a fantastic nightclub experience unlike any other in San Diego. What the Voyeur iApp does is give everything that a "Voyeur" would need to stay up to date with the latest shows, event photos, as well as keep all their friends in the know as well. The current version of the iApp has three main components; Events, Photos, and Blog. The Blog feature allows "Voyeurs" to access the blog containing interviews with the visiting acts and new and information about the club. The Photo Gallery feature allows users to scroll through the photo library of all of the past events and additionally gives them ability to download the photos. The Events feature has a scrolling calendar which provides users with the ability to quickly scroll through all upcoming acts. This feature is great because Voyeur has so many great shows it’s hard to keep track! In addition to listing events, users can select a specific event and bring up a menu that allows them to purchase songs from iTunes for that artist, request Table Service, purchase tickets and actually invite your friends to a specific event.
DSD: How is the new iApp different than just visiting the Voyeur website from our phones?
RM: Well the concept behind mobile applications is "Instant Gratification". Most mobile sites, even the ones that are optimized for mobile device viewing, require a really good data connection, usually Wi-Fi. Even with a good connection the features and information on websites can bog down your device and make it difficult to view seamlessly. Mobile applications take a few of the functions that a site might have and simplify them so that your mobile device can process the data much quicker, thus allowing users to have "instant access" to the app features. One of the great things about the Voyeur app is that it will notify you on your phone the minute a new act or show has been booked, and will even ask you if you want to buy tickets. For those of us who have missed some of the great performances that sell out quickly, this feature will give users the ability to be among the first to secure entry for those shows.
DSD: What is your personal favorite thing about the new iApp?
RM: My favorite feature on the Voyeur iApp is the "Invite a Friend". This feature allows users to instantly scroll through their contact list on their phone and select a contact. The app will automatically open an email that has a personal invitation to the event, the event details and a link to purchase tickets if they are available. This is the "Social Networking" portion of the app.
DSD: How do we get the App on our iPhones and when will it be available?
RM: The Voyeur iApp is currently available for purchase on the iTunes store. The app is priced at $9.99 and will grant anyone who purchases the app free entry to an upcoming show.
DSD: Why should every San Diego club have a smart phone App?
RM: Well any business, especially in the nightlife entertainment industry, wants to keep in touch with their customers. A mobile application is the best way to constantly be in contact with them simply by living in their pockets and purses. It allows for promotions to become viral by incorporating the power of social networking, consumers to be informed, and most of all it allows party-goers to become interactively involved with the clubs.
DSD: Why do you think interactive online marketing is important for the future of San Diego nightlife?
RM: I believe that Voyeur has solidified its reputation for being a brand innovator, night club innovator, and music innovator by being the first club on the block to harness to power of mobile applications. In line with being a trendsetter on all the aforementioned fronts, now Voyeur will be at the forefront of technology with the introduction of their mobile app. I admire their ability to foresee the need for this tool. As research shows, there is a huge shift from online interactivity towards mobile interaction and social networking via mobile devices. As venues compete for customers, and want to provide better customer retention management, mobile applications will prove a powerful tool in influencing buying decisions of consumers, as many studies show.
DSD: What is your professional background, and how did you get into business of making apps?
RM: iApp Technologies was formed to be on the forefront of the New Media Revolution. My experience in Information Technologies, coupled with my recent experience in Online Media Representation lead me to mobile applications. As I researched media channels and the industry as a whole, I saw that a shift towards mobile device interaction was beginning to take place. This shift was given a great push with Apple's introduction of its iAds network and the iPad. I saw an opportunity to be on the cusp of the wave as it begins to roll into the daily lives of consumers worldwide.
