Are San Diego Home Renovations Sound Investments?

Published : 1/28/2008 by Steve Scheckner

I was on broker caravan in Carlsbad the other day seeing a sample of what the current market had to offer.

Looking at each property through the eyes of some of my San Diego buyer clients, I was somewhat disappointed. I wasn’t disappointed with the homes; I was disappointed with some of the renovations that I witnessed in these properties.

You can search my website for Carlsbad Homes for Sale.

Selling a house is the same as selling any product. The greater your appeal to the real estate marketplace, the more likely you will have a "sold" sign in your yard. The best advice I can give you for renovating your San Diego home if you plan to sell in the not so distant future is to go to the pros.

The least expensive option is to visit the local new construction models. These big builders have spent a lot of money and resources in finding out what appeals to the average homebuyer. Another option is to work with an interior designer or a general contractor that has experience in your area with investors. Where your home is located will dictate whether your target market appreciates or expects certain upgrades and features.

For San Diego homeowners that plan to live in the property long term, my best advice is to do whatever makes you happy. We all have specific tastes that allow our personality to shine in our home. However, before you sink $50,000 in a lime green glass mosaic tiled bathroom with stone vessel sinks a year or two before you plan to sell, keep in mind the first thing that the future buyer for your home may do is rip it out.
