A growing concern among residents in the Carmel Valley and Del Mar areas is the looming Interstate 5 and Highway 56 Connector Project scheduled to begin next year.
At a meeting held in mid-November at the Carmel Valley Public Library, residents voiced their concerns about the plans that both Caltrans and its engineers have for the area. There are two separate plans that have yet to be decided between.
The first, called the "Auxiliary Lane Alternative," consists of a freeway lane stretching from Del Mar Heights Road to Carmel Valley Road. Additionally, there will be a ramp to enter the 5 freeway going north at Carmel Valley Road. This plan is believed to only threaten two residences if its construction commences.
The second, entitled the "Direct Connectors Alternative," would consist of two bridges - one to allow traffic from 56 West to 5 North, and the other from 5 South to 56 East. If this plan is approved, approximately 30 homes are in danger of being torn down, and several others put in a close vicinity of freeway noise.
Only those removed for the purpose of construction are eligible to receive federal payment for their loss. Problem is, houses are paid out based on fair market value, and with a drooping real estate market in San Diego County, it's likely residents won't be getting what they deserve for their properties.
The next meeting will be held on February 21, 2008 at 2pm at the Carmel Valley Public Library.
