Standing stagnant for almost half a century, Plaza Street is finally on its way to getting the facelift it deserves. Consisting of a war memorial to honor local resident soldiers who lost their lives in combat during World War II and the Korean Wars, a road median with a water fountain, as well as commemorative trees planted for each soldier honored, Plaza Street in Solana Beach has remained untouched for over forty years.
The Solana Beach City Council approved the plan in early October of 2007. Estimated to cost $50,000 these improvements are being made not only to update the area, but to continue to honor those who lost their lives defending our country.
In addition to the currently standing eight palm trees that each represent a fallen hero, six more will be added to honor those residents who lost their lives fighting in the Vietnam War. The plaque will be updated with the names of the additional six soldiers being honored and will be moved to another location in the near vicinity. Also, each palm tree will be split between the two sides of Plaza Street and replanted. This new design will give the project a new look and room to grow in the future.
Not only will the current memorial be updated, but this is believed to be the first of many upgrades in the Fletcher Cove area. The council has agreed upon park bench designs and also has a visitor and tourist kiosk in the works for the area. The city is currently accepting bids for the project and a start date has yet to be set.
