Since the recent wildfires in San Diego, residents within the county have become more aware of what they can do to protect both their homes and lives from the damage of fire. Weed clearing is of the greatest concern in portions of the county where vegetation growth partnered with high heat leads to massive amounts of dried brush, creating a fire hazard.
The city of La Mesa for example has weed clearing policies in effect throughout the year. The La Mesa Fire Department works in conjunction with the city to ensure that residents adhere to the brush codes. In March, a member of the fire department inspects all of the properties within the La Mesa city limits. During the month of April notices are sent out to residents that are in violation of La Mesa weed abatement codes. Property owners are then given 30 days to rid their properties of hazardous brush.
Re-inspections are completed in June, those who have not followed the orders delivered by the city are then sent a second notice granting them 5 days to clear their properties of dried vegetation. A third inspection is completed following the second notice, if property owners are still found to be in violation of city ordinance the city of La Mesa will hire a contractor to clear the property. After the property has been brought to code the owner is billed for the costs of clearing the brush in addition to a 45% administrative fee. The city reports that they only have to hire contractors to clear 1-2 properties per year with most residents willing to follow the rules in place once made aware of their non-compliance.
