Save the Date: Battle of the Chef Bands

Posted On : 12/17/2012 by Keli Dailey

The number two profession with tattoos? Professional cook.

And for charity some San Diego chefs are moonlighting in the most-inked line of work – musician.

The third annual Battle of the Chef Bands will take place at North County's coolest music venue, the Belly Up Tavern. The concert-slash-contest is set for Jan. 28, 2013--which is a Monday, also known as the restaurant industry’s day off.

Chef-rockers like Matt Gordon (of Urban Solace and Solace and the Moonlight) and Richard Walker (of his eponymous Pancake House) and drummer Paul McCabe (of La Valencia) will leave their kitchens in the hands of back-up cooks. Expect to see musical chefs from Barleymash, Jayne’s Gastropub and Hodad’s, too.

"I'm playing a set with a band that I was in that broke up 13 years ago," Explained chef Gordon, who's literally putting the band back together. His old Arizona band, called "Who's John Galp," will do a set. "What a better time to get together and play a few songs?"

The Battle of the Chef Bands will be emceed by Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien and DiningOut SD publisher Josh Kopelman (whose magazine also produces this fundraiser and supports Chef Showdown).

Proceeds will benefit the domestic violence awareness efforts of Center for Community Solutions. A $20 ticket includes tastings from Marina Kitchen, Sushi on a Roll, Nobu and other restaurants along with giveaways and the chef show. It's $30 at the door day-of. Info: ccssd.org
