Amarin Thai: Hillcrest’s Hot Spot for Curry

Published : 10/18/2007 by Meg Day

Because San Diego sports such excellent Thai cuisine in the form of Celadon, Lotus Thai, Royal Thai, and Taste of Thai, good curry is easy to come by - especially in Hillcrest.

But if you're looking to forego good for great, you'll find it at Amarin Thai, quietly tucked behind The Alibi on Hillcrest's Richmond Street, between University Avenue and Essex Street. Its unassuming front makes the restaurant an easy spot to miss amongst the bustle of University Avenue nightlife, providing a cozy neighborhood atmosphere and deeming it a true diamond in the rough. The classy interior tables and low-lit romantic outdoor booths make for a variety of settings in which to revel over the Hillcrest restaurant's extensive menu, equally fit for the meat-lover or vegetarian.

While Amarin is most known locally for an impressive list of chef seafood specialties, mock duck, and other unique dishes and desserts, be sure to treat your taste buds to at least one of their terrific curries. A long-time fan of red curry, I was first introduced to a yellow curry (with tofu, potatoes, and onions) at Amarin that was truly unforgettable. Perfect in texture, taste, and spice, the food was even better than the inviting atmosphere. Throw in a delicious Thai iced tea and a piping hot Tofu Tod appetizer, and savor the evening!
