If you’ve ever leaned over a stranger’s lap on the inbound
flight to San Diego, wanting to breathe in every light from America’s finest
city below, then you must dine at Bertrand
at Mister A’s. Located on the
twelfth floor of a Banker’s Hill building, Mister A’s offers a dazzling view of
downtown—-and a menu that does for your taste buds what the view does for your eyes.
Once a velvet-swathed restaurant with a dress code so strict
that the hostess would provide rental jackets to underdressed men, this San Diego classic was
renovated in 2000 when Bertrand Hug bought the restaurant. Now a modern classic
with Stephane Voitzwinkler as chef, Bertrand at Mister A’s offers a wide range
of seasonally-changing menu options.
Warm pumpkin-squash soups comfort diners in the fall and
fruit-infused mixed green salads refresh in the spring. Entrees range from grilled,
gorgonzola-encrusted Angus beef tenderloin to the pan-seared scallops and
lobster-tail combination. Be sure to
save room for dessert – crème brulee to chocolate mousse soufflés will surely
delight you.
Insider’s Tip: While
parking is more abundant than in the neighboring Gaslamp
Quarter, sometimes valet the only way to go. Be sure you have cash on you.
