While other restaurants may serve bread to complement the meal,
the bread at Con
Pane is the highlight of the entire feast. With a changing line up of breads,
scones, focaccias, cookies, and seasonal delights, this rustic bakery and café
in Point
Loma has been known to attract a line that winds down Rosecrans.
Once you get to the cash-only counter, you can walk away
with a traditional French baguette for $1.85, or a hearty kalamata olive roll
for $3.95. Sweet temptations include chocolate brioche twists, ribboned sweet
bread made even sweeter with chocolate and powdered sugar, for $2.75.
If your diet consists of more than just bread and water (and
whose doesn’t??), you can please your taste buds with a selection of gourmet
sandwiches, including the rich “Almost Grilled Cheese” (a gourmet version of
the classic with triple cream French brie and crumbled gorgonzola, toasted on
rosemary olive oil bread for $6.35) or the tasty “Italian Salami” (salami,
roasted Roma tomatoes, pesto olive oil, and romaine lettuce for $6.95).
Insider’s Tip: Bring
a little extra cash with you, as Con Pane charges for the smallest incidentals,
including extra olive oil, pesto, cream cheese – even extra butter pats.
