If you work in Downtown San Diego or are just visiting for the day, be sure to put Le Cake Chateau on your list of places to pop into. Located at 7th and B, this little San Diego bakery/bistro/café combo is sure to hit the spot, no matter what you're craving.
Step inside during Le Cake Chateau's morning coffee and croissant rush to find yourself transported by aromas of freshly-baked bread and sizzling crepes. Join the lunch crowd on the outdoor patio for vegetable wraps, chicken crepes, and pesto paninis in the sun. The afternoon menu also features burgers, sandwiches, salads, pasta and steak -- you'll be hard-pressed to find something you don't like. Le Cake Chateau's gourmet coffee selection and healthy variety of beverages on hand will blow you away -- but that's nothing compared to the real reason you came: chocolate cake.
Whatever Le Cake Chateau's secret, they shouldn't give it away any time soon. Nowhere else in San Diego can you get the Famous Chocolate Truffle, a rich, moist cake filled with truffle and topped with Belgium ganache. If they've sold out of that (and they often have, it's that good), try your tastebuds on the Opera Tort, a wonderfully spongy almond cake with layers of French mocha buttercream and Belgium ganache. Other personal favorites include the petite Lemon Tart and the choose-your-own cookie case at the back of the café. Ask about cookie specials -- the staff is just as sweet as their confections, and often you'll be able to score a bargain.
Insider Tips: If it's a healthy meal you're after, be sure to get your order in before 3pm -- that's when the kitchen closes and your options are reduced to the sweet treats in the display cases and a variety of coffee drinks.
