Discover the Original San Diego Extraordinary Desserts in Hillcrest

Published : 5/27/2008 by Dan Tricarico

At the original Extraordinary Desserts in Hillcrest, which sits beside Balboa Park and is known for intimate and romantic ambiance, you can luxuriate among every decadent treat imaginable.

Choose among tortes, cake, cheesecake, carrot cake, crème brulee, chocolate mousse, Dulce de Leche, cookies, shortbreads, ice cream, sorbet, and Torta Misu - a signature twist on traditional tiramisu that consists of espresso soaked ricotta cake layers and Italian Mascarpone rum cream. According to the menu, however, one of the best selling dishes is the Gianduia: rum-laced chocolate layers combined with hazelnut butter cream, chocolate mousse, and boysenberry preserves, all covered in crushed pralines.

Even better, the quiet uptown streets, proximity to the peace and tranquility of the park, and the sophisticated and elegant, yet cozy décor make Extraordinary Desserts a no-brainer for a first and/or special date. Walk that special someone up to the counter, order their favorite treat, find a secluded corner, and let nature take its course.

Quite simply a dessert lovers' fantasy, Extraordinary Desserts has been serving up little slices of paradise at 2929 Fifth Avenue for two decades. They do not take reservations, though, and certain creations do occasionally sell out.

Insider Tip: Also visit Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy at 1430 Union Street. While they still offer the classic desserts of the original shop, this newest location (which opened in July 2004), also serves paninis, salads, cheese selections, and over 50 types of loose leaf tea. Enjoy the extraordinary indulgences of Extraordinary Desserts in San Diego.
