These days it’s hard to walk a mere three blocks without passing a Starbucks. Where did all the quirky-but-reliable independent coffee shops in Downtown San Diego go?
The answer: just down the street. A few doors down from the Starbucks on B Street in Downtown San Diego – right outside of the Gaslamp Quarter – you’ll see a line emerging from the door of Old Gallery Coffee, and a small crowd of regulars mingling inside. The shop may be narrow, but the menu is far from it. Satisfy your caffeine needs or stomach rumblings with any one of their assortments of coffees, teas, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, bagels, pastries, or smoothies.
Need a quick pick-me-up? Sample Old Gallery Coffee’s Costa Rican coffee, or the decadent Mocha Blanca. Want a quick meal to-go? Grab one of Old Gallery’s delicious breakfast burritos or lunch-hour sandwich and salad specials. Looking for a healthy alternative? The Koala is the best (and cheapest) smoothie in town, combining strawberries, kiwi, and oj to create a delicious and filling fruity explosion.
The best part about this not-so-well-kept secret spot? Old Gallery Coffee’s friendly staff is happy to usher you up the side stairs to the surprisingly large “gallery” where large-scale canvas paintings don the walls and twenty sets of tables and chairs sit waiting for your sigh of relaxation. This spacious place of respite has a railing that overlooks the shop below, allowing for prime people-watching while you sip your joe or relish a warm pastry. Old Gallery Coffee could easily become your new favorite spot for reading the paper, writing your novel, or simply taking in Downtown San Diego at its finest.
