Any local who suffers from a serious sweet tooth addiction knows that Karen Krasne’s scrumptious selection of edible art at Extraordinary Desserts can curb almost any and every craving. With two locations in Hillcrest and Little Italy, dessert lovers can indulge in every sugary whim from vanilla bean crème brulee and chocolate croissant bread pudding to lemon meringue tarts and passion fruit pavlova.
But while we locals have enjoyed perfect pastries and decadent cakes from these revered desserties for over two decades, Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy is gearing up to serve a whole new lineup of heavenly fare.
On Wednesday, October 6th from 4pm-7pm, Extraordinary Desserts will unveil an all-new lavish Cheese Bar featuring a mouthwatering selection of the best imported and domestic pasteurized delicacies. For $12, guests can help themselves to all they can eat from an assortment of 8 to 10 cheeses. On the bar, rotating offerings will include such specialties as Humboldt Fog Goat Cheese, light and creamy with subtle earthy hints; Cashel Blue, a mild creamy cows’ milk cheese from Ireland that melts in your mouth; and Pecorino Ginepro, a firm sheep milk cheese soaked in juniper berries and rubbed with balsamic vinegar. The sumptuously arranged Cheese Bar will also feature assorted fresh and dried fruits, breads, crackers and a collection of Extraordinary Desserts signature spreads including chutneys, jams, jellies and honeys.
And since we all know that cheese and wine are BFF, the introduction of the weekly Cheese Bar coincides with the launch of over 20 red, white, sparkling and port wines available by the half glass. The wide-ranging selection of wines is made possible by Extraordinary Desserts’ newly installed Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system, which keeps wines perfectly fresh after they’ve been opened. At Extraordinary Desserts, the emphasis is on small production, boutique and artisan wines from vineyards that revere detail and are in many cases organic, sustainable and/or biodynamic. On occasion, expect to enjoy such gems as Pombal do Vesuvio from Portugal, an exquisite Douro Valley red, and Stephan Ehlen Riesling. An extensive list of other global wines and specialty craft beers from Extraordinary Desserts’ comprehensive bar rotate onto the Happy Hour menu every week such as Pinot Grigio, Alois Lageder, Italy 2007; Malbec Reserva, Santa Julia, Argentina 2008; Bual Five Year Madeira, Cossart Gordon, Madeira Island; Late Bottle Vintage Port, Smith Woodhouse, Portugal 2005; Chardonnay, Joyce Vineyards, Monterey, California 2008; and Mountain Cuvee, Chappellet, Napa Valley 2008.
Regular Happy Hour food and drink specials, offered daily Monday through Friday from 4pm-7pm, will be available as well, including house creations like old fashioned onion dip with kettle chips and Karen’s fragrant Australian “Dukkah” dip with warm ciabatta bread.
