For a neighborhood relatively void of its own signature burger joint, Hillcrest's Lucky Buck's restaurant is a good start. Located a few blocks west of Park Blvd on University Ave, Lucky Buck's will bring you back with their urban interior and ulta-'90s hits blaring out the speakers. Squashed between Lei Lounge and Ichiban, Buck's stands out with its bare concrete floor, corrugated metal siding, and a window-paned garage “door” that rolls up to let you take in San Diego's balmy evenings from an indoor booth.
While Buck's offers gourmet burritos and sandwiches on their menu, it's the burgers you'll come back for again and again. A thick ½-pound burger can be dressed up in a variety of ways, with the Longhorn BBQ Buck and the Southwestern Buck (bacon, guac and pepper jack cheese) proving to be neighborhood favorites. Veggie burgers are also available for substitution. Whatever you order, be sure to finagle yourself some of their specialty waffle-cut fries; they are, hands down, the best fries in all of Hillcrest.
And even though you'll have to order at the counter, don't expect this to be fast food - a sign hangs near the register, stating that their burgers are so fresh and juicy that cooking often takes up to 8 minutes per side. Not to worry, though. Buck's recently upped their prices and expanded their menu to include an extensive list of margaritas and draft beers. Relax with a pitcher of their signature Buck's Draft on the outdoor patio and do some serious University Avenue people-watching.
Be warned: Since adding more alcohol to their menu, they've gotten rid of their soda fountain. Even though the milkshakes are good, don't expect to quench your thirst with a Coke like you might expect to at a typical burger joint.
Insider Tips: Park up Normal Street for easy access without any hassle. Also be sure to inquire about Happy Hour and Lunch Specials, as they're not always well-advertised. Finally - try the chipotle sauce!
