There is nothing I enjoy more than an In-N-Out Double Double cheeseburger. Two juicy fat-dripping meat patties combined with gooey cheddar cheese and that obviously good-for-you mayo induced spread. I’ve never been to Heaven, but I’d like to think they would have these in abundance there.
Unfortunately, as deep rooted as my adoration for these burgers are, my waistline isn’t so compromising when it comes to the amount of grease that goes into making the scrumptious little delicacies.
Luckily, there is a light at the end of the tunnel bringing good fortune to those who share my unfortunate addiction.
O’Brothers has catapulted onto the San Diego dining scene, bringing a fresher and healthier view of the classic All-American burger. Boasting the only fully certified organic kitchen in California, owners Derek and Craig Cowling promise “everything that touches your lips, including cups and napkins, is 100% certified organic.”
As newcomers to the restaurant business, the Cowling brothers say their organic burger was born at a summer backyard barbeque. Eager to feed hungry family and friends, Craig grabbed an apron and began serving up little pieces of beefy, organic heaven. Neighbors raved and called their friends, telling tales of the delectable organic burger. It was then and there that Derek Cowling had his “eureka moment.”
Since the grand opening of O’Brothers in February, 2009 inside Horton Plaza Mall, the Cowlings have gone from feeding hungry neighbors to feeding hungry San Diegans. Burger options include the Big O’ with cheese, bacon, avocado, tomato and onion and the Western Burger with bacon, cheese, homemade barbeque sauce and onion rings. Vegetarian? Not to worry. O’Brothers also serves up alternative choices such as Portobello Veggie Burger with Portobello mushroom, tomato and onion and the patty-free Veggie Burger with avocado, onion and tomato.
And if you think O’Brothers simply stopped at the organic beef, you best think twice. Everything from the fries, salads, condiments, desserts, sodas, teas and even the beer are all organically produced. And guess what? It doesn’t even stop there. The Cowling brothers have taken the phrase “everything organic” to an entirely different level. Countertops made from reclaimed glass, concrete and copper, drinking straws made from biodegradable cornstarch and naturally crafted staff t-shirts – what doesn’t scream organic here?
Goodbye In-N-Out, hello new "unguilty" pleasure O'Brothers.
