Pancake Perfection at Richard Walker’s Pancake House

Published : 11/7/2007 by Meg Day

Next time you've got a hunkering for good griddlecakes, head for the long line at Market and Front downtown, and prepare yourself for pancakes done right.

Hailing from Chicago, Richard Walker's Pancake House brings the secrets of speedy business and perfect pancakes to San Diego, accompanied by a long list of Dutch babies, waffles, and omelets. The pancakes, though, are the reason to endure the weekend brunch line and the tight seating. Try out the Raisin Pecan pancakes dusted in cinnamon sugar, or opt for a stack slathered in strawberries or freshly baked apples. Each comes with hot syrup and house-whipped butter for perfect flavor.

While the menu consists of mostly pancakes, make sure to give a second or third glance at the Dutch babies: a baked pancake that provides a nest for a variety of vegetables, havarti cheese, and meat. Be warned that ordering a Dutch baby can add twenty minutes to your dining time - but that it's definitely worth it.

Insider Tip: As Richard Walker's gourmet menu is the most coveted in town on weekend mornings, the line can wrap around the building. But, it moves quickly and steadily, and gives you a chance to review the menu and pick your dish of choice. On a warm spring or summer morning, the sunshine makes for a pleasurable wait, but if the rain clouds are out - don't forget your umbrella!
