Phil – The Master of the ‘Q

Published : 6/8/2007 by Jessica Nager

Do you have a brother or an uncle who flaunts his “kiss the chef” apron when he’s on barbeque duty? Tell him to surrender it to Phil. Immediately.

Phil’s BBQ, originally in Hillcrest and recently relocated to Point Loma, is the kind of BBQ joint legends are made of. With a signature barbeque sauce, an impressive menu selection, and a desperately loyal following, Phil’s is the place to go in San Diego when you’re craving barbeque.

The menu covers a wide variety of meaty options—from the popular El Toro, a pulled-pork sandwich, dripping with the Phil’s classic barbeque sauce (less than $7) to a full-rack of ribs (includes a large side or two smaller ones and rings up at less than $20). The sides are exactly what you’d find at any respectable picnic—but better. A lot better. Fresh corn on the cob, crisp coleslaw, perfect potato salad, and Frisbee-sized onion rings are available to complete your meal.

Let’s be honest—your uncle just can’t live up to the magnitude of this legend. Take him here, and in one bite, he’ll understand.

Insider’s Tip: Vegetarians shouldn’t be scared of Phil’s. Unlike your uncle, Phil’s won’t force-feed their just-off-the-barbie dishes on you. Instead, it offers veggie burgers, salads, and vegetarian-friendly side dishes.

Bad Ass BBQ

I have been a faithful Phil's customer for years. This place was awesome when it was over in Mission Hills.... you could smell it from blocks away. Seriously, the best barebeque I've ever had. Now, the new location is bigger and getting even more exposure! The guys and I go down all the time for some good eating.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT!

This place must appeal to everyone because we go here on our girls' nights out and clearly guys do it, too! My favorite is the chicken tickler meal.... lathered in BBQ sauce and many onion rings, fries, and cole slaw. If you are trying to lose weight... don't go here. BUT, if you want good food, don't deprive yourself!

Dine-In or Dine-Out BBQ

There's two lines when you walk into the Sports Arena Phil's BBQ. There is a pre-order line and a walk-in line. A friend and I just stopped by to just grab food to go. After buying some BBQ and driving all the way back home, the food still tasted hot and hella tasty! If that to-go food tasted so damn freakin' delicious, I know we definitely need to go back and try the same stuff while dining in.
