Richard Walker's Pancake House for Best Breakfast in San Diego

Published : 6/4/2008 by Dan Tricarico

It's time to enlighten the rest of San Diego to what many locals already know, Richard Walker's Pancake House is one of the best breakfast and brunch spots in the city. Located in the Marina District just outside the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego, Richard Walker's offers both classic and gourmet dishes to start your day.

Diners can choose from an extensive array of omelets and egg dishes with Canadian bacon, sausage or smoked ham. There are also nearly a dozen different signature omelets, including the Fresh Spinach Omelet with Cheese, Veronica's Very Veggie with Cheese or the Best Western that comes with ham, onions, and bell peppers. Traditional griddle favorites include the Fresh Strawberry Patch Waffle, Potato Cakes, Wheat Germ Cakes, and the Cherry Belgian Waffle that features the house cherry jubilee sauce on top of a golden brown waffle and sprinkled with powdered sugar. And let us not forget the Eggs Benedict and a largely satisfying variety of flapjacks and crepes.

For good measure, the menu also assures us that the corned beef hash is handmade on the premises, the sliced bacon is extra thick and the cheddar cheese on the cheese omelet is "all melted and bubbly hot." For the non-breakfast eater, salads, sandwiches and plentiful deserts are also available for brunch. There is even a section for "Lite Eaters," who choose to save larger meals for later in the day.

The signature long line doesn't lie at this famous San Diego restaurant. Just like at Filippi's Pizza Grotto in Little Italy, it's safe to say you can spot a great restaurant from the eager crowd patiently waiting outside. But, unlike at Filippi's, the line at Richard Walker's Pancake House moves quickly, and all guests are assured a great spot for breakfast or brunch outside on the covered patio or indoor within the quaint dining room.

Whether you are a business person relaxing before the work day, a tourist sampling one of the local hot spots or a native looking for a new adventure in your own backyard, Richard Walker's Pancake House in San Diego is always worth the wait for breakfast and brunch.
