Ra Sushi is ruling
proof that sushi is the hippest dish in town. Located right on the
periphery of downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter, the place is booming from
noon until night. Decorated in vogue shades of red and black, with
red globular lanterns hovering overhead, you’ll automatically feel
cooler upon arrival. A hole-in-the-wall sushi dive this ain’t.
Instead, Ra upholds an ambiance hot enough to rival any Gaslamp club.
Yet those more interested in quality rolls than a modish scene are
also in luck. Ra’s rolls up some darn good sushi, and whether you
order a standby like Philadelphia or California, or a
ultra-innovative twist like the Crazy Monkey Roll (mango, cream
cheese, avocado, and even connoisseurs of the genre will be suitably
impressed.
At dinnertime,
Ra will set you back quite painfully if you order enough rolls for
the visit to be worth it. Time to rejoice—the restaurant offers one
of the most valuable Happy Hours in town. Although the discount menu
is limited, the price breaks are incredible. Once you’re tired of
the Happy Hour selections, stop by for Industry Night on Sundays
after eight. No, you don’t have to be in the service industry for
the discounts offered, like Flying Fish rolls, California rolls, and
spicy tuna rolls for around $3. Other non-sushi items are reduced as
well, like chicken yakitori and coconut shrimp tempura, along with
some intoxicating beverages.
