Jon Mangini is known for making Neapolitan style pizzas a must-try thing at his cool and casual restaurants where locals kick back with brews and buddies. Once you hear about how he’s celebrating National Pizza Week, you’ll know him for his generous heart, too.
On Monday, January 7, all of Mangini’s pizzerias will be kicking off National Pizza Week in San Diego by “Raising the Dough”. The fundraiser will donate 100% of proceeds from all pizzas purchased at BASIC Urban Kitchen + Bar in East Village, URBN North Park and URBN Vista to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund. Just head in to any of the three locations from 5pm to 7pm and order up the classic deep dish styles knowing that your dough will help those who suffered from the recent tragedies.
The Newton, Connecticut shootings were especially close to Mangini’s heart. Born and raised in New Haven, he created his notorious pizza pies in San Diego as a nod to his Connecticut ties. After the recent tragedy, Mangini went back on a visit with his wife, who was also raised close to Sandy Hook Elementary School.
"You hear about the tragedy all over the news, and it’s devastating, but going back home and visiting the town, seeing the banners and signs, and bearing witness to a community that is in the midst of unimaginable grief really hit home for my family and I,” says Mangini. “After coming back to the West Coast, I wanted to do something to show support in my own way.”
National Pizza Week will be celebrated across the country, starting today until Saturday, January 12. “Raising the Dough”: 5pm to 7pm on Monday, January 7 at BASIC Urban Kitchen + Bar, 410 10th Avenue; URBN Coal Fired Pizza, 3085 University Avenue in North Park; and URBN Vista, 203 Main Street in Vista.
