San Diego Kaiserhof Restaurant and Biergarten

Published : 3/31/2008 by Dan Tricarico

The San Diego Kaiserhof Restaurant and Biergarten originally opened in 1980 just off the I-8 in Mission Valley. In 1992, owners Horst and Paula Bolter moved to their current location on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. in Ocean Beach.

Kaiserhof is abundant in "Old Country German" affection, with an extensive menu of traditional favorites made from Pork, Chicken, and Seafood. Kaiserhof won the 2005 San Diego Magazine Readers Poll for Best German Food, and is a staple for Ocean Beach dining.

Selections from the appetizer menu include the Sautéed Mushrooms, Smoked Salmon with Toast Points, or Escargots. Another popular starter, the Wurst Sampler, consists of sliced and grilled Knackwurst, Bratwurst, and Bauernwurst, and is served with sauerkraut. If it's lunchtime and you're in the mood for a sandwich, try the Black Forest Ham and Swiss on Rye or the Kaiserhof Grilled - sliced bauernwurst with sauerkraut and melted cheese on a Kaiser roll.

Regulars enjoy popular dinner specialties ($18-25) such as Wienerschnitzel, pan-fried veal cutlet, pounded very thin, Sauerbraten, marinated German pot roast, and Rouladen of Beef, stuffed rolled beef, onion, bacon, and carrots. More adventurous entrée choices include Beef Goulash, Calves Liver, and Zigeuner Schnitzel, sautéed pork cutlets in gypsy sauce. And of course, no German restaurant would be complete without its own version of classic Potato Pancakes. For dessert, don't forget the Apple Strudel or Mozart Sundae, vanilla ice cream, half pear, and fine chocolate liqueur. The Biergarten is also fully stocked with a complete list of draft beers.

Offering unique menus for New Year's Eve, Christmas, and Thanksgiving, Kaiserhof prepares Roast Goose throughout the holiday season. Other seasonal fare is served for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother and Father's Day, and, of course, Oktoberfest.
