For those love birds getting bored of the same old dinner and a movie routine, Café Japengo is offering a fun way to keep things fresh with sushi-making classes for couples. Café Japengo is the recipient of the Gold Medallion Award for “Best Sushi” from the California Restaurant Association and is known for their unique rolls, expansive Asian-fusion menu and hip atmosphere.
Care to learn the craft with your special someone? Two dates are available for this culinary adventure; roll up your sleeves Saturday, March 17 or Saturday, April 21.
The classes will take place within the Café Japengo dining room from noon ‘til 2pm and will be taught by the Executive Sushi Chef Gerald Warner, an award-winning sushi connoisseur. Among many accolades, Warner was named “Master Sushi Chef – Best of Show” in a California Rice Commission Sushi Masters Competition. For $60 per person, you will learn techniques straight from the master while sipping on two sake tastings.
Guests will be given tutorials on the proper way to handle sticky rice and taught how to form both hand rolls and regular rolls. They will also learn the history behind the art of sushi and Café Japengo, characteristics of various types of fish and the ultimate secret of where to buy sushi items in San Diego to recreate the sushi making experience when at home. While there isn’t a finale quiz, you will get to taste all your hard work together at the end of class.
Café Japengo is located at 8960 University Lane in La Jolla. For more information, call 858.450.3355
