Tease Me, Taste Me, Eat Me , Treat Me at Jade Theater

Published : 5/19/2008 by Dan Tricarico

Welcome to Jade Theater, a mesmerizing mix of music, meditative meal options, mixology, and ambient mystery.

Operating on three different levels - the Zen-inspired Lounge, The Progressive Asian Restaurant, and the Ultra Buddha Lounge - this downtown San Diego nightlife and dining spot offers guests a peek into the customs, cocktails, and cuisine of the Far East.

The disparate sections of Chef James Montejano's progressive, four-course menu are playfully labeled Tease Me (small bites comprised predominantly of seafood), Taste Me (starters and appetizers), Eat Me (entrees), and Treat Me (desserts). He even warns that many diners don't get past the Tease Me section. What are you really trying to say, Chef James..?

While secluded, the upper level dining area overlooks the goings-on below and offers unique views of the Zen Lounge, the entry-level focal point of the venue. Entrée selections include such Asian-inspired delicacies as Sugar Spiced Salmon, Seared Hokkaido Scallops, Wok-Fried Lobster, and - for the carnivores in your party - Black Bean Ribeye Steak served with tempura vegetables. Entrees range from $25-39.

From the dessert menu, choose from banana fritters, coconut cake, or sample Jade Theater's signature five spice chocolate indulgence, a chocolate cake made with sake-marinate cherries.

Happy Hour at Jade is offered Monday-Friday from 4:30-7pm, where eager guests cash in on early bird prices. Happy hour specials include $5 appetizers (Satay Skewers, Albacore Sashimi and more), and discounted drinks from $3 to $5 (Sapporo on tap, specialty house drinks and more).

After dinner, retire to the Buddha Ultra-Lounge, a basement-level space that combines modern luxuries with ancient touches. This subterranean lounge takes its inspiration from Hollywood depictions of shady Hong Kong opium dens, and is eerily reminiscent of an Asian underworld from decades long past. In other words, it is a perfectly alluring place to enjoy some music or a nightcap while exploring one of downtown's newest and most exotic nightclub experiences.

From happy hour to late night, rely on Jade Theater for a unique downtown experience - just outside the Gaslamp, right above the ordinary.
