The Spot Simplifies Dining in La Jolla

Posted On : 5/3/2007 by Kirsten Noelle Hubbard

With so many up-and-coming restaurants polka-dotting downtown La Jolla, it can be a daunting task to choose a spot to eat. Luckily for the indecisive population, one La Jolla restaurant makes it clear that there's really only one option: The Spot, a surprisingly modest restaurant and tavern located on Prospect Street. Its central La Jolla Cove location, premium cuisine, upbeat atmosphere, and inviting prices wow a predominantly thirty-something crowd for all-business lunches and all-party dinners and nightlife.

The Spot lives up to its name by offering a wide variety of cuisine options. Rather than visiting several different La Jolla restaurants for pizza, seafood, and steak dishes; there's only one spot to go to satisfy all culinary cravings. The Spot serves a crisp cross of Chicago style pizza, fresh fish, and gourmet steak specialties. On a lighter note, lunch favorites at The Spot include salads, sandwiches, and burgers. And don't let the name "tavern" throw you off—The Spot is no dark beer-only bar. This hot spot  provides loyal customers with a full bar and a fine wine list.

Insider tip: The Spot holds "Wine and Dine" evenings featuring wine tasting and dinner specials.

Rude without a cause

A recent experience at this establishment merits a mention here as it involves extremely rude behavior by the “owner”. Our party of 3 had just ordered our dinner, when a young man poked his head in our booth and said loudly and sardonically, “Thanks for stealing our menu covers.” He disappeared, before we could react. I asked our waiter, a very pleasant young man, who that person was. He said embarrassed, “The owner.” To make a long story short, “The owner” accused us of theft, refused to address the issue, refused to identify himself, and remained extremely unpleasant and impolite. I should mention that our party included me, a business exec in my forties, a guest – she is a business exec from Europe, and my father who at 81 is a retired physician and a long term resident of La Jolla. While this incident might be explained as the frustrated reaction of a tired and overwhelmed restaurateur to the day’s events, insulting customers are never acceptable service. La Jolla has a lot of great places to eat, avoid this one.
