Top Ten San Diego Sushi Restaurants

Posted On : 12/30/2011 by Ryan Eisenacher

If I had to eat one thing for the remainder of my days here on earth, no questions asked, it would most definitely be sushi.

It’s safe to say that in my entire lifetime I’ve consumed enough ginger and yellowtail to feed a small family of 12.  Ok, that’s a boldface lie. It’s more like a family of 15.

Whether you're a novice or an expert in the world of raw fish, you probably have a certain San Diego sushi restaurant you stick to. But it’s time to broaden your horizons because San Diego sushi chefs have introduced our palates to inventive creations that put the customary Cali Roll to shame. Think creamy ginger (mmmmm, ginger!) teriyaki dressing, Cajun seared tuna, avocado salsa, and cucumber and pineapple-jalapeno emulsion. Um, yes please!

From Zenbu Sushi in Cardiff and Hive Sushi in East Village to Harney Sushi in Old Town and Ono Sushi in Hillcrest, it’s time to pass the wasabi and massive bowl of ginger and discover the top ten San Diego sushi restaurants.

Harney Sushi in Old Town
Best known for their inventive sushi served with a “funk shui” party atmosphere, Harney Sushi is a place where experimentation mixes with celebration to create the ultimate dining experience. The environment at Harney Sushi is as inviting and hip as its service and nothing beats sushi dining while listening to a DJ spin old tunes and new grooves. Dine on customer-created specialty rolls such as the Guns N Rolls made with tempura asparagus, spicy tuna and avocado, topped with tuna, yellowtail, ‘welcome to the jungle’ salsa, tobiko, micro greens, togarashi, and rayu; the Mike Check made with grilled lobster, kani kama, cilantro and cucumber topped with salmon, yellowtail, avocado salsa, shiso wrapped in rice paper and served with sweet citrus chili dipping sauce; and the Hope made with shrimp tempura, spicy crab and avocado topped with Cajun seared tuna, micro Asian greens and wasabi citrus aioli.

Sushi News: Harney Sushi is one of the newest restaurants in the country to jump on board with a sustainable seafood menu. They have committed to cleansing their menu of harmful ingredients that put our ocean in danger. Instead, they’re making seafood that matters, benefiting both the ecosystem and our health. Harney Sushi is the first sustainable sushi restaurant in San Diego to make this move and only one of a handful in the nation.

Zenbu Sushi in Cardiff
With its lavish atmosphere and one-of-a-kind sushi bar, Zenbu (meaning “all” in Japanese) offers San Diego locals superlative Asian cuisine that rolls oceanic and environmental sustainability into one. On the appetizer menu, diners will find many traditional and non-traditional selections such as Sesame Tuna Tataki and Vintage Prime Sirloin cooked tableside over hot volcanic rock. Sushi lovers will fawn over the vast scope of flavorful rolls such as the Pill Box made with spicy crab and avocado topped with tuna and shrimp pressed in a traditional Battera box and finished with black tobiko and gold flake with a drizzle of ponzu; and the Salbacore made with spicy crab, fresh asparagus, Asian pear, cucumber, daikon sprouts, topped with seared albacore and avocado then finished with a dot of siracha, Asian vinaigrette and orange zest.

Hive Sushi in East Village
Encased in luminous, orange walls with an inviting sushi bar and petite four top tables set beneath a black staircase, the dimly-lit sushi lounge brings a sultry New York-esque ambiance to our otherwise sunny-dispositioned San Diego. Hive boasts an ample menu of delicious sashimi, nigiri, nectar style sashimi, regular rolls and house special rolls. We can’t get enough of the Crazy Czech Roll made with spicy tuna, scallops, cucumber, avocado, topped with fresh salmon slices and bonito shavings then drizzled with siracha aioli; the Cabo Roll complete with yellowtail, lime, cilantro, Serrano chilles and green onions; the Nectar Roll made with grilled shrimp, mango and cucumber topped with salmon, ponzu, tobico and green onions; and the Knotty Roll made with spicy tuna, cucumber and shrimp tempura topped with avocado, seared tuna, wasabi aioli, green onions and garlic ponzu.

Ono Sushi in Hillcrest
San Diego locals swear by this casual-cool Hillcrest sushi restaurant, and it’s easy to understand why. At Ono Sushi, those in need of a fish fix can expect only the freshest the Pacific has to offer. Start your meal off with the Crab & Cream Cheese Wontons served with sweet chili sauce; the Spicy Oyster Shooters made with pepper vodka and assorted roe; or the Green Mussel Dynamite, a savory dish made with mussels baked in garlic sauce. After you polish off your appetizer, grab your soy sauce and wasabi and prepare to indulge in refreshingly delicious selections such as the Smokin’ Roll made with smoked salmon, cream cheese, spicy mustard and daikon sprouts; the Volcano Roll made with crab, smoked salmon, shiromi and shrimp then topped and baked with special sauce; and the Boom Boom Roll made with yellowtail, tuna and spicy sauce.

Mizu Sushi in Misison Beach

Located right across from Belmont Park with sparkling views of Mission Bay, Mizu Sushi is easily one of the best kept sushi secrets in all of San Diego. Mizu’s menu offers a variety of fresh and flavorful choices to please fish lovers and vegetarians including soups, salads, appetizers, nigiri, sashimi, and specialty rolls. Try the Temptation Roll, mae with shrimp tempura and topped with fresh water eel, salmon, yellowtail, tuna and albacore; the simple, crisp and tangy Mission Bay Roll, made with spicy tuna and topped with salmon and fresh lemon slices; or the refreshing Adrian Roll, made with spicy tuna and topped with snappe, salmon, tuna, yellowtail and shrimp.

The Dragon’s Den in East Village
The newest foodie hot spot to grace East Village, The Dragon’s Den brings an all-new and highly anticipated niche experience to downtown San Diego’s bustling nightlife. A sexy and seductive Asian-inspired bar and restaurant, this hip and healthy restaurant serves up a unique selection of flavorful family-style dishes and authentic Japanese-style sushi. We can’t get enough of the rockin’ appetizers such as the Flaming Dragon Lips made with baked green mussels, spicy mayo and eel sauce; and the flavorful Dragon Balls, panko-crusted stuffed mushrooms with spicy mayo. When you’re ready for the main feast, nosh on our favorite sushi signature, The Dragon Roll, made with shrimp tempura, kanikama, cucumber, avocado and high quality eel. (pictured main)

Roppongi Restaurant + Sushi Bar in La Jolla
Serving up a eclectic fusion of Asian seafood, meat, and poultry in an exotic ambiance with a touch of Far East flair, this go-to La Jolla restaurant and sushi bar is guaranteed to satiate your craving for high style. Roppongi’s savory Maki sushi rolls are all fresh made to order and are sure to take diners on an adventure of the senses. We can’t get enough of the sweet La Jolla Sunset Roll made with spicy Dungeness crab, salmon, avocado, Meyer lemon, honey-miso glaze and raspberry coulis; the melt-in-your-mouth Kobe Roll made with lobster, crab, asparagus, seared Kobe beef, hoisin, honey barbeque, white truffle aioli and thai basil; and the all new island-inspired Hirame Pineapple Roll made with Japanese halibut, spicy crab, avocado, cucumber, and pineapple-jalapeno emulsion.

RA Sushi in Downtown
Best known for successfully combining distinctive sushi with a trendy, hip atmosphere, RA Sushi in downtown San Diego is ruling proof that sushi is the hippest dish in town. For years, RA’s trendy ambiance and palatable dinner menu has consistently kept diners coming back for more. Sushi lovers will rejoice over the tasty selection of tropically-inspired rolls including the flavorfully-intense “RA”ckin’ Roll made with kani kama crab and cream cheese rolled in rice and seaweed, lightly tempura battered and topped with guacamole and "RA"ckin' Shrimp, finished with a creamy ginger teriyaki sauce, red beet tempura bits and togarashi; or the Pacific Roll, made with a spicy mix of albacore tuna, cilantro, jalapeño and cucumber, rolled and topped with fresh avocado and mango salsa; finished with red beet tempura bits and sautéed cashew nuts.

Sabuku Sushi in Normal Heights

Just because you’re hungry for a sushi roll doesn’t mean you’re restricted to just rice and seafood. This Normal Heights sushi joint features an extensive menu of eclectic ingredients not typically used at traditional sushi restaurants. At Sabuku, you’ll find fan favorites such as the Chicken Teriyaki Roll made with Chicken Teriyaki, Red Onion, and Pineapple on the inside, and Sweet Mandarin Sauce and Spicy Ginger Aoli on the outside; the Bacon & Scallop Roll packs in the Bacon with Pan Seared Scallops and Red Onion, Sweet Mandarin Sauce and Spicy Ginger Aoli. Or try the Kaboom Roll, filled on the inside with Seared Filet Mignon, Chicken Teriyaki, Grilled Red Onion and Zucchini, with Glazed Shrimp on the outside and topped off with Sweet Mandarin Sauce. Not to fret if you’ve got a hankering for some of the basic sushi tastes. Common hand rolls can also be found at Sabuku, including Spicy Tuna Rolls, California Rolls, and Spicy Crab Rolls.

NOBU in Gaslamp
Nestled in the perennially hip and centrally located Hard Rock Hotel, NOBU is best known for its award-winning dishes, impeccable service and ambiance that is sophisticated yet lively.  Since its opening in 2007, local sushi fanatics have been flocking to this revered restaurant to dine on Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s innovative culinary creations. Indulge in cold dishes such as the Nobu Style Sashimi Tacos made with choice or yellowfin tuna or salmon; the Octopus Capaccio with jalapeno dressing; or the Tasmanian Trout Sashimi with dried miso. If you crave fresh fish, NOBU serves up rare pieces of sashimi including Japanese Red Snapper, Bluefin Toro, Live Fluke, Baby Abalone, and Live Octopus. Hand and Cut rolls include classic selections such as Yellowfin and Bluefin Toro topped with scallions; the Asparagus Yellowfin Tuna; and the Salmon Avocado roll.

Every sushi lover MUST try Zen5

Zen 5 is my all-time favorite sushi restaurant in San Diego. Now that I live in PB, I go way more often, which is great. Their speciality rolls are huge and are actually unique- not just the typical 'speciality' rolls. But the best part of Zen5 is the music.. I am a huge reggae fan, and this place plays the best reggae. I'm talkin Barrington, Sister Nancy, Don Carlos, Damien etc. Not just the typical Bob Marley mix (no offense Bob). Go to Zen 5 ready to party.. this place is always packed with a energetic crowed taking down saki bombs like it's their job..

Sushi Deli is great on all acounts EXCEPT the wasabi.. I mean common man, the soy sauce has more spice. heat-it-uppppp.

Ra Is Da Bomb

If for nothing else, go there for happy hour! Cheap beer and great pot stickers at a discounted price means another round is always just around the corner. You can't beat their clientele of trendy chop stickers and smiling faces, either.

tadashi is a godsend for big stomachs

you guys should really consider sushi ota if youre in pb. i can't believe that's not on this list of top ten sushi restaurants!! :( not cheap, but just by the amount of japanese businessmen going in and out at all hours it's open you know it must be good!! that being said...tadashi sushi has such great deals. the all you can eat is especially worth it if you go with a bunch of starving guys haha

TOKYO SUSHI

This list definitely needs to acknowledge Tokyo Sushi by SDSU. Its a small joint with great music and DELICIOUS sushi. I'm a fan of a lot of the restaurants listed, but TOKYO is probably top 3 for me. GREAT prices too!

Zensei and Edamame

Zensei Sushi in Northpark is by far one of the top 5 in San Diego. Sushi on the Rock is very expensive and not good sushi, just a good seafood restaurant as their sushi menu is limited. Edamame in South Del Mar is a very good restaurant and should be on this list.

STATION SUSHI - BIRDROCK or SOLANA BEACH

If you are looking for some of the greatest affordable sushi in San Diego, you should head to Station Sushi. They have two locations one in Bird Rock and the other in Solana Beach. I've been going to station for years and they NEVER disappoint. I love going to Sushi on the Rock and RA if I'm looking for more of a special occasion where I'm willing to pay more, but for my weekly fix, with its moderate pricing and large rolls, Station is hands down my favorite. Its not as cheap as say, Tokyo House in Pacific Beach or some of the other smaller sushi joints, but its not as pricey as RA. Try it out for yourself sometime. The fish is very fresh and everyone who works there is super friendly! They have a ton of different rolls.

Sushi Deli.....DEATH!

About two years ago my girlfriend and I ate at Sushi Deli in Hillcrest. We had been there before and would go to Ichiban for happy hour on the other side of Hillcrest once or twice a week. While there that one night I saw a friend picking up a to-go order for her and her boyfriend. 24 hours later I died. I won't go into specifics, but let's just say I lost 15 pounds over that weekend. I was bed ridden for 18 hours. My girlfriend puked all night, my friend got sick, and her boyfriend (no lie) had to go to urgent care. It was so bad. I swore off cheap sushi at that point. You get what you pay for, and if it's cheap sushi, best of luck.

SUSHI DELI

I think that other guy just couldn't handle real Sushi and was used to paying loads for one bite of sushi at Ichban. Or maybe next time dont drag home fresh fish and let it go bad. ;) I go to the Sushi Deli 1 in Hillcrest and Sushi Deli 2 downtown alllll the time (4+ times a month) and I have NEVER gotten sick. Sometimes ( like weekends at dinnertime) the wait is about 15-30 mins....but if you have the time to wait take a stroll with firends and whatnot, since they're both good locations for strolling, or sit at the bar and wait it's totally worth it. The food is great and affordable. Service is always good.

Harney's is amazing

Sooo good, but a little pricier then the rest which is why I dont go all the time. Try the tempura scallop roll...it melts in your mouth and is my favorite. The atmosphere is so fun too.

Chiba Sushi

I think San Diego's best sushi place is Chiba Sushi. Always fresh and so delicious and guess what sooo cheap. This place is kinda small and always crowded. If you are looking for a good sushi with pricless you should go there and one more thing, chicken terriyaki is so delicious and just $5,95.

Sushi Deli 3

Went to sushi deli 3. After waiting for over an hour (hostess told us 40 minutes) we finally get seated. Inside was so loud you had to yell to have any sort of conversation. Prices are awesome. Miso soup was "warm" at best. Sushi was edible, but nowhere near great. Other food was good. I doubt I would return with so many other options.

Sushi San Marcos

There's a sushi place off nordal, san marcos, across street from Wal mart, forget the name, but everytime I've eaten there, we get some type of "stomach flu." Not going there again. Too bad, it was cheap and pretty good sushi.

Best Sushi in North County San Diego

Lauren Brunelle must be one of those too good for north county types.......because there are five north county sushi restaraunts that destroy her top ten choices..... ALL YOU CAN EAT.... 1. Hon Sushi Oceanside-HWY 101...make sure you dont fill up on the rolls...they are like eating desert...about $22 per person 2. Hana's Sushi (Oceanside) and sister restaurant Sushi Taisho (Carlsbad)-phenomenal albacore and shrimp tempura hand rolls but skimpy on the creative rolls for all you can eat...about $26 per person 3. Mikko Sushi-Carlsbad your standard run of the mill sushi place....nothing special about the ambiance...but the food is great and resonable...50% of sit down orders 4. Benihana's Carlsbad-Poinsettia....I know a cookie cutter sushi place ...butttttt.....the sushi is awesome, the service was awesome but since its a cookie cutter restaurant chain....its at the bottom just because.... And last but not least....this is a phenomenal sushi place but its not all you can eat.... The Fish Joint HWY 101...rolls are named after Gilligan Island Characters....and are outstanding....flavored saki...great service.....

Sushi Top 10 Posted

This List is not very accurate at all. I am local in San Diego and I can tell you that some on the list in the Top 10 are OK, but not all are worthy. Zen 5? Top 10 in San Diego? Not the case

Top Ten San Diego Sushi Restaurants ???

I'll keep this short. Sushi Delis = mediocre at best same with Ra Sushi which has some shitty sushi. instead of those 2 they should have put Sushi Ota and Hane on this list.

NIBAN is amazing!

I can't believe they forgot to put Niban on the top list. I think Niban beats Sushi Deli. The food is top quality and really cheap. The only negatives are there is always a really long line (but hey that tells you it's reallly good) and the service is really bad. Nibans is located on Clairemont Mesa Blvd in the same shopping center as LA fitness and walmart right next door to players bar and grill. A MUST for all sushi lovers!

Taka Sushi in Downtown Gaslamp is the Best in San Diego!

I can't believe that none of you have tried Taka, or you wouldn't be writing about other restaurants! Taka has been named the #1 sushi restaurant in San Diego for several years. I've tried so many others, it's like a breath of fresh air when we return to Taka. Yes, it's expensive... maybe that's why people aren't commenting here... like the one who said the "all you can eat for $22" comment (probably above). Have you tried all-you-can-eat sushi? Oh my Lord! Are you kidding me? Fresh only, please. Taka takes fresh delivery daily on their seafood, even on Sundays they go down and get it themselves at 6:00 a.m. I know the guy who does it, he's my favorite sushi chef.... Maru!

fresh healthy vending

To the delight of the fast food industry, quick food options have become engrained in the mind of the consumer as a choice between convenience and nutrition. For students and employed adults who don't have time to prepare meals, convenience inevitably wins out almost every time.

Gaslamp's Hidden Gem

Most of these top ten sites leave out the hidden gems like Sushi Den on 6th and Market. You wouldn't know it from the outside, but this place really packs a punch. The fish is always fresh and staff is always very friendly. I definitely recommend getting the Shrimp Crunch Roll. Here's their menu www.sushidensd.com

over 25 years and STILL the best

Nobu Sushi in Solana Beach has been serving San Diego county Since before I could walk. This is BY FAR the best sushi place in San Diego. Regular conversations with other customers include showing off who has been there for more years. I'm 25, been going for 21 years...i've tried Nobu Gaslamp (WAYYY TOO EXPENSIVE) tried most of the places on your list, and they just don't compare to the friendly, inviting atmosphere; reasonable price (for sushi); and ABSOLUTLY quality.

Added 04/10/11
Hane Sushi & Sushi Ota - Sharing #1

What kind of insane list is this? Real sushi has nothing to do with the eccentric "rolls" at some of the joints you list. If you want sushi the way the Japanese intended it, you must go to Sushi Ota in Mission Bay or Hane Sushi on 5th St. in Hillcrest.
