Top Ten San Diego Sushi Restaurants

Published : 1/18/2007 by Jessica Nager

Whether you'e mastered the art of ordering sashimi, or are still intimidated by raw fish, you’re bound to be overwhelmed by the abundance of sushi restaurants in San Diego. It’s hard to know where to go, so we’ve done all the research for you.

Whether you’re looking for a cheap, neighborhood place to go sake-bombing with friends or a quiet, gourmet establishment to impress a date, you’ll find the perfect spot among San Diego’s best sushi restaurants.

Ra

At Ra, Downtown’s swankiest sushi restaurant, sushi is a lifestyle – a good, expensive, delicious lifestyle with amazing happy hour treats.

Kabuki Sushi

Pacific Beach’s Kabuki Sushi is the place to go when you want your sushi straight from the water. Sit at the oval table and grab your just-made sushi as it floats by you.

Tadashi

At La Jolla’s Tadashi, grab a seat at the sushi counter. Then place your order, savor the sushi, and repeat – as many times as you like.

Zensei Sushi

Sushi-loving locals rave about the sashimi at Zensei in North Park. One bite of the Zensei Combo, and you’ll start raving, too.

Onami Seafood Buffet

Mission Valley’s Onami is the place to go when you’re begging someone to just try a California roll – if they realize sushi just isn’t their thing, there’s an expansive seafood buffet of alternatives.

Seau’s

Seau’s? For sushi? You bet. For surprisingly good sushi, visit the Raw Mana Lounge inside Seau’s for a wide selection of sushi options, where you can even ask the chef for an omakase roll: personalized sushi that you create!

Zen 5

If you like a little reggae with your roll, be sure to visit Zen 5, a mellow Pacific Beach restaurant, featuring over 40 different sushi roll combinations and a totally kick-back crowd.

Ono Sushi

If you’re craving good, fresh sushi and are willing to pay for every tasty morsel, visit Hillcrest’s Ono Sushi.

Harney Sushi

Say it fast – Miso Harney – and you’ll get the vibe of this Old Town sushi place, the perfect alternative when you want to trade in your tortillas for tempura, and sip some miso instead of a margarita.

The Sushi Delis

With locations in Hillcrest and Downtown, Sushi Deli One and Too are the best places to go for cheap sushi done right.

Every sushi lover MUST try Zen5

Zen 5 is my all-time favorite sushi restaurant in San Diego. Now that I live in PB, I go way more often, which is great. Their speciality rolls are huge and are actually unique- not just the typical 'speciality' rolls. But the best part of Zen5 is the music.. I am a huge reggae fan, and this place plays the best reggae. I'm talkin Barrington, Sister Nancy, Don Carlos, Damien etc. Not just the typical Bob Marley mix (no offense Bob). Go to Zen 5 ready to party.. this place is always packed with a energetic crowed taking down saki bombs like it's their job..

Sushi Deli is great on all acounts EXCEPT the wasabi.. I mean common man, the soy sauce has more spice. heat-it-uppppp.

Ra Is Da Bomb

If for nothing else, go there for happy hour! Cheap beer and great pot stickers at a discounted price means another round is always just around the corner. You can't beat their clientele of trendy chop stickers and smiling faces, either.

tadashi is a godsend for big stomachs

you guys should really consider sushi ota if youre in pb. i can't believe that's not on this list of top ten sushi restaurants!! :( not cheap, but just by the amount of japanese businessmen going in and out at all hours it's open you know it must be good!! that being said...tadashi sushi has such great deals. the all you can eat is especially worth it if you go with a bunch of starving guys haha
