Luckily for our environment, as well as our taste buds, many San Diego chefs embrace the farm to fork revolution and focus on sustainable and organic ingredients. Chef Brian Johnston takes things one step further with a venture into restaurant supported agriculture by way of an all-new organic farm site featuring a sustainable garden.
The garden will produce fresh ingredients year-round for both The Red Door and The Wellington, two San Diego restaurants run by one top chef, Brian Johnston. The ground-breaking ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 1 as Chef Johnston plants the first seed.
The Red Door Family Garden was proudly designed by Urban Plantations and features a “food forest”, a bevy of produce, edible flowers, and a natural composting system. Incredibly good use will be made of the ½ acre of land that this farm sits upon, and perhaps the idea itself will be a seed of inspiration to chefs everywhere.
The opening ceremony will take place from 9am to 10am and will give locals a chance to observe all that goes into growing an organic garden. With the rise of interest in organic and sustainable produce, this event will help lead the way for those attracted to growing their own fresh produce. Refreshments will be served.
The Red Door Family Garden is located at 5234 Alzeda Drive on Mount Helix in La Mesa, CA.
