From Fresh to Fresh-er, this La Jolla dining spot has seen many restaurants come and go, but the latest hit - Whisknladle - seems to be satisfying local clientele in a more permanent sense.

Living the philosophy that you get out of the pot what you put in, Whisknladle in La Jolla aims to please guests with a unique blend of gourmet comfort food.

Traditional favorites are paired with unique gourmet pleasures at Whisknladle, such as the fish tacos with pleasant surprises like mango jacama slaw and aioli, or the burger with spicy onions, gorgonzola, bacon and egg. Raw ingredients are always fresh and organic and purchased from local growers. Smoked, pickled or infused products are all prepared in-house, providing for a delectable Sunday brunch with homemade sausage and bacon. And nothing pairs better than the raspberry tequila or ginger infused sake.

Most of Whisknladle's menu is prepared to be shared tapas style, to ensure everyone gets a little taste of everything. And with so many great tastes to discover, that's a definite advantage. Individual plates are small in selection availability, but large in taste, offering a nice option for those who never learned how to share. Always leave room for dessert though, with such splendid tastes as the chocolate orange fallen soufflé tart, and the chocolate peanut butter vacherine, your taste buds will beg you to stay even if you have already loosened your belt a notch or two. And therein lies one of the natural beauties of the gourmet comfort food concept, it's ok to indulge.

With so many chic San Diego restaurants serving tiny portions of low fat entrees, it is a blessing to have something so wholesome, simple, and comforting enter the local dining scene, particularly in the fusion capital of San Diego - La Jolla.

Late night cocktails and dining

What La Jolla was missing before Whisknladle came around was a laid back lounge bar to go to. Jack's can be too glitzy and Jose's is like being in Cancun for spring break. Whisknladle is the perfect in between, it has awesome cocktails and attracts a great crowd. I was there last Friday and the bar was full of young professionals mostly in their late 20's to mid 30's. It was nice not to have to scream to make my friends hear me. I think I'm going to be a frequent visitor here.
