Ask Jessie: Help Me, I’m Lopsided!

Published : 10/31/2007 by Jessie Mandel

Q: I have really skinny legs and a big butt. What can I wear that won't focus so much on the disproportions of my body?

A: If you are attempting to build a classically stylish wardrobe, resist the urge to bury yourself under your garments. Truth is, clean tailoring makes almost anybody look better.

When women attempt to camouflage figure flaws (whether real or not), they often buy clothes that just add bulk to their problem areas. Although layering has been in fashion for a while, those who are self-conscious with their body shapes should opt for tailored apparel so their body has a cleaner-looking silhouette. A well-cut suit with a nipped-in waist or a jacket that ends no lower than mid-hip will make almost any woman look chic!

Try the trend of layering by wearing a long sleeved turtleneck under a vest and then top it off with a blazer. This will allow you to explore with the look of layering, without adding bulk. Finish the ensemble with an A-line skirt and your look will be golden.

Try playing around with hem lengths as well. For those blessed with some curves a hem cut below the knee will look marvelous, as long as the skirt is fairly fitted. Also, remember to stay away from short and wide trapeze-style skirts, or anything that resembles a triangle when you lay it flat. The look will emphasize your disliked features.

Finally, make sure items are more fitted over your flattering areas, to highlight them instead of hide them.

If you find yourself struggling to find a dress that can be worn for a night on the town, try on a classic sheath dress (also known as a fitted shift style). Sheath dresses are simple and oh-so-sexy, whether you're relatively proportionate top and bottom, straight or curvy! The simple cut proves how uncomplicated shapes (and a few well-placed darts) can epitomize your figure to look like polished perfection. Finish off by paring your dress with opaque tights and a gorgeous pump, or step it up with a pair of ankle booties. Regardless, you'll look amazing!
