Q: Are skinny jeans on the way out? I haven't seen them around as much lately.
A: From straight to skinny, narrow to flare, jeans this season really range. But let's face it; jeans (especially for San Diegans) are always in as long as you follow the ultimate jeans trend, which is to find a look that flatters your body type the most.
Fall's runways have been filled with fluid, wide-legged silhouette styles. So if you're ready to jump on the wagon and give wide leg jeans shot, I'll commend you, but advise that you make sure the fit, color and texture are right for your personal body type.
Wide leg jeans are made to be long, wide and wonderful, so make sure you choose a style, or waistband height, that works your assets best. If you have wide hips, don't bother with a trouser style jean because side pockets tend to stick out on "hippy" figures, adding the appearance of extra pounds. Instead, try a higher rise jean (3cm below your bellybutton) and pair it with a high heel. You'll look elongated and appear up to par with the season's 70's style trend.
This season, my favorite high-waist jeans are Juicy Couture's wide-legged high-rise, which retail for $178 and are sold at Neiman Marcus. Although Juicy is well known for cheesy over-advertised track suits, I'll be the first to admit that Juicy jeans are like no other. Infused with the perfect amount of stretch, this rise is perfect for those who want to try a high rise, without looking like they've broken out their vintage denim from 1970.
Still, if you're set on sporting skinny style denim, feel free. Just make sure your hem length hits just above the ground – or else it might look like you've either just cleaned out your closet. or that you're trying to prove how hip you were back in the 1980's.
Whichever style you decide is best for you, make sure you key in matters like portion control. Remember, if you're wearing a wide-legged patterned pant, a fitted top is key. On the contrary, with sleek solid bottoms or skinny-legged ensembles, voluminous ruffled blouses will add some stylish flair.
