Q: I sweat a lot. What are some good fabrics for me that are also office friendly? (Don’t publish my name – I don’t want my boss to know!)
A: Lux fabrics with voluminous cuts are making a comeback this season, which is great for those who can't get a grip on the ever-changing San Diego climate. Though lux fabrics and voluminous cut styles were typical centerpieces in last spring's wardrobe, designers this season have transitioned them into some of fall's key style dresses.
Dresses are a great alternative to the cotton blouse/ linen pant ensemble for those too-hot-to-function days. Spruce up a flowing sleeveless dress for the office by pairing them with sheer cardigans or knitted v-neck sweaters. To ensure this stylish season ensemble is office worthy, keep an eye out for details on apparel like an embellished neckline or updated sleeve and note that embellished dresses function well and can easily be worn on most silhouettes.
Dresses with details look best when layered under a jacket or blazer because they appear not only fresh but chic, however don't forget about accessorizing because the little extras are key to making this look work.
For starters, try pairing your flowing frocks with a pair of dark opaque or patterned stockings. Also be sure you've picked or layered your look tastefully, because if a dress is short then it should never be too tight. Be tasteful, if you're wearing a plunging neckline then be daring and incorporate a lightweight turtleneck tee-shirt underneath to make it office-worthy. The brand Theory, sold in various high end department stores, are my personal favorite because they are lightweight and stand up against the test of time.
The simple act of layering lightweight fabrics will not only make it look like you've got stylish taste but you'll be able to breath, not pant throughout the office.
Finally, remember you work in a professional setting, so make sure that if you do go sleeveless, you've incorporated a blazer or a tasteful sweater to complement your frock. Even though this is San Diego, armpits in the workplace are never, nor will ever, be a key trend.
