We eat healthy, sustainable food, follow a regular fitness routine and practice self-control in the local party scene, yet what we see in the mirror rarely reflects the "perfect" body image as portrayed in popular fashion magazines. We all have that one friend who eats whatever she wants and still resembles the bone-thin Twiggy icon. But, aside from those freaks of nature, the majority of women have natural curves in all the right places. In fact, according to Women’s Wear Daily, the average woman’s body size in America today is a size 14. So, why don’t fashion boutiques cater to these curvy females?
Enter Curve Couture, a new upscale designer boutique in Solana Beach created exclusively for curvalicious ladies. Deirdre and Joel Mick grew tired of seeing fashion boutiques only offering coveted designer labels in small sizes, and decided to do something about it. This husband and wife team envisioned an upscale retail concept filled with fashion-forward designer clothing in sizes 12-24.
“Most upscale designer boutiques carry up to a size 10, if you’re lucky,” explains Deirdre Mick. “For some reason, many well-known fashion designers stop designing at size 10, which is fine for teenagers and possibly twenty-year olds, but beyond that it just really isn’t all that practical for the vast majority of women in America. I should know; I’ve been at least a size 12 for as long as I can remember, and I am proud of it.”
Curve Couture found its home on Cedros Avenue, within the popular design district located just blocks from the ocean in Solana Beach. Through a chocolate and white striped awning that reads “Runway Styles, Real Sizes” shoppers will discover a welcoming environment filled with soft shades and natural décor, including bare birch branches, a woven sea-grass chair, and cabana-style dressing rooms complete with champagne pedestals. The merchandise is divided into three main categories: Weekend Adventure, Impress the Boss, and Hot Date. Depending on where your lifestyle leads you, you’ll find fashions by international designers such as Lundstrom, Fred Sabatier, Melissa Masse, Kouroush, Lauren Vidal and Franck Anna, among others.
For Deirdre and Joel Mick, it’s not just about improving the selection, but rather elevating the entire shopping experience. Curve Couture will focus on personalized customer care, including on-site stylists who know which looks flatter curvy women. Deirdre explains the personal inspiration behind this passion project: “I want to offer my experience and fashion knowledge to help women feel empowered by their natural beauty, to make women feel confident exactly as they are and for exactly who they are. It’s time for women to flaunt their curves!”
