With the Del Mar Race Track opening its gates for the 2008 summer season, it's that time of year when the ladies have to start thinking about what to place atop their noggins for Opening Day festivities.

Each year, Opening Day in Del Mar brings about an early cocktail hour, the fresh smell of horses and old school glamour. As the highly anticipated day approaches, many a stylish woman will take on the trying task of finding the perfect hat.

The hat hunt can be difficult in this day and age when current San Diego style trends do not favor the addition of a wide brim to an outfit. Allow me to let me lay your worries to rest and simplify your search for the perfect Del Mar Opening Day hat.

This year, pay a visit to the Village Hat Shop in Hillcrest and be marveled at their dream selection of perfect Del Mar hats. A gal can choose a cloche, a Bretton or even a swinger. If you are feeling shy, choose at a hat in a neutral tone like tan. But for the showy folk out there, try on one of their blood red, brilliant blue or purple toppers. When choosing a style think classic or vintage. Skip on anything boring, too sporty or inappropriate, like a cowboy hat. When in doubt get a simple sunbody with a brim of 5 inches.

When choosing your full outfit for Opening Day, always start with the hat, and go from there. A structured sleeveless dress with a trim or loose skirt is best, but Katherine Hepburn would agree that some chic slacks with a summer blouse will do just fine.
