Let’s face it: a shoe addiction can be expensive to feed. Wardrobes of the well-shod can run far into the thousands. So what if you’re somewhat financially challenged?
Mint is an incredible find. Located right in the main Hillcrest hub, the candy-colored, tunnel-shaped store seems futuristic, almost like a spaceship from another dimension. And the shoe selection, dispersed throughout rows that climb towards the ceiling, is also out of this world. You’ll find Pumas, Converse of every color, Irregular Choice, Diesel, Vans, and Steve Maddens for cheaper than at their namesake stores. Like hidden jewels, funky alternatives designed by urban independent labels hide among the big names. Prices range widely, from the twenty-dollar range to over one hundred; but you sure won’t find Manolo Blahniks here.
Mint also offers accessories and clothes, mostly shirts of the political and “Vote for Pedro” variety, fun to sniff around, but no match for the shoes. Although, the shop is definitely a good place to people watch. The owner claims a clientele composed of “artists, old people, young people that look old, 24 hour fitness sweaty types … people with tourette’s … rich people from TJ, cross dressers … skaters, girls with straws in their hair” among many, many eclectic others. See and be seen, and be shod!
