Local Style Spotlight: Geena the Latina of AJs Playhouse

Published : 7/3/2009 by Michelle Guerin

Insiders know that Channel 93.3 is a go-to radio source for pop hits, celebrity gossip and one of the most entertaining morning shows in town. Whether we’re driving to work, heading to school or cruising back home from a long night out at Gaslamp clubs, we always wake up with laughs on AJ’s Playhouse.

From AJ to Hula, Sonic and Geena, after tuning in to the Playhouse day in and day out, it feels like we know these personalities, but there’s still a whole lot to learn. This week we’re taking your airwaves relationship one step closer to reality with confessions and fashion tips from Geena the Latina

She is inspired by Fergie, takes time to inspire local youth, believes confidence is the best accessory, and feels naked without bright nail polish and big ol’ hoops. But mostly we love Geena because she is a self-confessed shopping addict who can find something to buy in any local boutique. Get the “Big Scoop” on Geena the Latina in this week’s Local Style Spotlight.

DiscoverSD: Tell us about your role at Channel 93.3 and your involvement in the San Diego community?

Geena: I am the co-host of AJ’s Playhouse morning show. I am in charge of everything entertainment and women issues, and overall giving my opinion on stuff. Sometimes it’s serious, most times it’s just entertaining. Our main goal is make sure our listeners start their day off with a laugh! If a person says you made me laugh when I was having a bad day, then we did our job.

In the community I speak at various schools across the county encouraging the youth to attend college and stay out of trouble. Because of my background and because of the things I have gone through in my own personal life I feel as if they will actually listen to what I have to say. I have a passion specifically for young teenage girls from under privileged backgrounds. I try to empower them to be better than what they are “expected” to be given their social and economic backgrounds.

DSD: Outside of work, where can we find you in San Diego?

G: I’m always downtown! I love it! I am totally a downtown type of girl. I like all the hot spots like Side Bar, Hard Rock or Stingaree. But I also like more chill places like La Puerta, Basic or Whiskey Girl to hang out with the crew. You can also catch me everywhere in Mission Valley (where I live)! I love eating sushi at Seau's and shopping at Nordstrom’s Rack! I try to limit my visits to the Fashion Valley Mall to once a week… OK maybe twice =) I am seriously addicted to shopping….it’s bad.

DSD: In 3 words, describe your style.

G: Forward, bright, urban.

DSD: Who are your celebrity fashion icons?

G: Rihanna or Fergie – I love how they both take risks with everything they wear. Whether you love it or hate it, it’s definitely different, flashy, and fashion forward! I love things that are unique and go against the norm. For guys, Kanye West has the best style because he does things that are different. He doesn’t wear what everyone else is wearing. He adds his own personal touch on everything. I love how he is very eclectic and bright with his fashion choices.

DSD: What style wisdom have you’ve learned from being around red carpet worthy celebrities?

G: A lot of what you wear is how you wear it. People who exude confidence can look good in anything. If you’re not comfortable in what you are wearing, it shows. But if you have the attitude of “I’m rocking this, and … what?!” people respect that.

DSD: A local entertainment icon, what is your go-to outfit for a San Diego event?

G: I like to balance simple chic stuff with designer things. I tend to buy inexpensive shirts and tops and jackets to mix and match with designer jeans and heels. I love big purses and bright colored nail polish. I’m ALWAYS wearing my big ol’ hoops and big chunky jewelry. I absolutely love HUGE rings! I like everything bright! Lots of bracelets! I accessorize everything I wear even if I’m just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Accessories make the outfit. And a balance of “in-expensive” and “designer” pieces make the outfit complete. Having a couple go-to hats is also a must-have (for those bad hair days).

DSD: Where do you shop in San Diego?

G: Honestly, I know there are a lot of boutiques in Hillcrest and North Park, but I haven’t got a chance to check them out, although I really want to. I try to find pieces from the most random places. If I’m walking downtown and I see something cute in the window of a random store I will walk inside and get it. If I’m at the mall I do the same. I can find something wherever I’m at.

DSD: What “style era” was the worst for you?

G: Umm…. where do I start? I’ve had plenty of failed style attempts! I can’t believe I ever wore all the shirts with the different sayings on them like “I make my own money” or “Single” – haha! Also the go-go boots and knee high era was not cute. In 10 years from now though, I will probably be looking at what I’m wearing today and be talking about how bad it was too.
