From the old Aubergine era to continuing DJhere success and the coming-soon Syrah upgrade, you’ve witnessed the ongoing progress of San Diego nightlife, but you may not yet know the man holding the reins on the evolution.
Meet Matt Spencer – the PB taco shop saving brain behind SD Creative, DJhere Productions, Firehouse, Syrah, Mi Casa and then some. This Jesus chic San Diegan is inspired by Brad Pitt, leads a secret life in Mexico, and isn’t afraid of the collared shirt tuck-in. But mostly we like him because he shops at Thread. Get to know Matt in this week’s Local Style Spotlight.
DiscoverSD: Can you tell us about your involvement in the San Diego scene?
Matt: One of my companies, DJhere, has a motto, “San Diego is evolving, be a part of it”. I think I add fuel to the fire of what’s new, cool, and creative in San Diego. Meaning I don’t always create it, but if it’s out there “it” has a way of finding me. Then, I promote it like a crazy person. I guess you could say I’m an “elder statesman” of the industry.
DSD: Outside of work, where can we find you in San Diego?
M: Well my secret life is on a motorcycle or driving my dune buggy with three other friends scared out of their minds in the imperial sand dunes or Mexico. Other than that I would say, Vegas is ok and kind of hollow. I like Miami Beach, Chicago, or New York; they are the pulse of what’s next.
DSD: In three words, describe your personal fashion style.
M: I only need 2 – Jesus chic.
DSD: Who are your celebrity fashion icons?
M: Brad Pitt’s character in Oceans 11 because whether he’s dressed in a suit or dressed down he always looks casual and classic.
DSD: A local nightlife expert, what is your go-to outfit for a night out in the Gaslamp?
M: True Religion jeans, cool shoes from Aldo and a classic white Nordstorm button up… I’m not afraid of the tuck-in.
DSD: Also known for casual-cool Pacific Beach lifestyle, what is your go-to outfit for an afternoon of day-drinking or relaxing by the beach?
M: Flip flops, comfy jeans and a white American Apparel shirt.
DSD: Where do you shop in San Diego?
M: Bloomingdale’s, American Apparel and Thread Show when it’s in town.
Love Matt? So do we. Go seek wardrobe inspiration from Matt at Firehouse, Mi Casa or Syrah.
