Resident Gaslamp party-goers know the double-decker Thin and Onyx Room as one of the first and longest lasting club scenes in San Diego. Locals in-the-know have grown to love The Pearl Hotel in Point Loma – from catching dive-in movie nights on Wednesdays to lounging by the pool on Sundays with the rhythms of Groove 24/7. And lucky San Diegans caught the Conspire Launch Party for Community in Banker’s Hill – a restored and art-inspired apartment complex that entered the scene with a bang. But, I bet only a select few know that these venues have much more than reputation in common.
Meet Greg Strangman – the stylish man running the show at the aforementioned venues, and then some. From his laid back lifestyle to casual cool wardrobe and ridiculously impressive resume, get to know Greg in this Local Style Spotlight.
DiscoverSD: Can you tell us about your role in San Diego?
Greg: Full time job of running the show at LWP Group, Inc a Southern California (re)Development firm. Owner of the Pearl Hotel, Onyx and Thin nightclubs, multiple apartment buildings including the new Community @ Martin Bldg + Flats. Also very active volunteering in the SD community.
DSD: Outside of work, where can we find you in San Diego?
G: Livin’ it up in Ocean Beach. Dig the beach and playing smash ball with Nadav (DSD President), but also the pulse of a city. Coffee at Influx in Golden Hill, a drink or two at Starlite, always like a new or not so new small quality restaurant - Café Chloe is a favorite. Harney Sushi in Old Town is a good vibe. I’m always on the look out for a good art show.
DSD: In three words, describe your personal style.
G: Progressive, layered, eclectic.
DSD: Who are your celebrity fashion icons? Why?
G: No real icons. Do guys have any? I am all about the casual dealio. Work or play.
DSD: A business man, what do you wear to work?
G: Demin, quality designed/printed graphic t-shirts and a solid jacket, either boots or sneakers. Not traditional business attire.
DSD: A local nightlife expert, what is your go-to outfit for a night out in the Gaslamp?
G: Similar to work, but maybe a bit more layered and complex (always casual). Also gotta have the side holster belt/bag to carry the goods.
DSD: Where do you shop in San Diego?
G: G Star for demin (only demin to wear as far as I am concerned), Unsteady and Blend in East Village. Mesh in North Park. All about independent small designers and labels. No department shopping for the kid. Shopping abroad is always a big part of my travels.
